I can control how much or little I put in and it gives it a little scent. No one in our house has sensitivities, but we've used these from Day 1 with both boys. And like other people have said, I'm not surprised the dreft made the paint peel, it's just the chemical makeup of detergent (especially undiluted without all the water in a washing machine!). I'm sure my free and clear would do the same thing. I hate scented detergent generally, and find Dreft to be ridiculously overly scented for small babies. I washed my clothes with it when I visited my sister and my clothes still smell like Dreft! I think the best you can try to do is avoid added scents and fragrances. I'm sure you can go the totally homemade route but there are chemicals there too and a sacrifice in efficacy to some degree.<br /> The ingredients in the major manufacturers detergents are pretty much the same, minus not using dyes and perfumes for the "free and whatever" types. I would imagine all detergents have something that would break down paints, wood stain, etc faster than water. I highly doubt dreft has anything worse than all the other detergents mentioned, besides perfume/scent.
