We did BLW starting at 5 months and she was eating solids well before a year. She still drinks a lot of milk, but by a year it was WCM. You should definitely give BLW a try and see how it goes, you will likely be more than fine by 12 months.

I feel like whether you start with purees or BLW usually babies are pretty good with finger food by 12 months?? We sort of started with BLW at 5.5 mo but it wasn't going well so we switched to purees with just a little bit of finger food at like 8 mo and now at 10mo we've just switched back to mostly finger food and she is doing SO much better. She hasn't reduced her formula intake at all yet and she isn't really consuming that much volume of food yet, but I have seen so much progress in the last month that I feel like it could be a whole new ballgame at 12 mo. I sort of feel like it is just hard to predict/control things too much with babies eating and you need to go with the flow a bit in getting them on solids.

My DD started BLW at 6 months and was self feeding almost everything we ate by 9-10 months. I honestly wouldn't worry about supplementing with spoon feeding etc unless you actually see that your LO isn't adapting quickly to BLW. Most babies I've known as they get closer to 1 want to exclusively self feed/eat what you eat. So it would be unlikely (but possible) that you might need purées at daycare at a year.

our daycare did BLW type of feeds starting at 1. We did whole milk from a cup at daycare at 1 as well. We just nursed when she was around me, no pumping. She did fine even as a very nursey baby - she nursed a lot on weekends and had long morning and night sessions, but was totally fine without pumped milk otherwise.

I gave her BLW foods at the beginning of the meal, while I was eating and then topped her up with purees if she wanted some afterwards.

We started with BLW at 5.5 months doing it at home for breakfast and dinner. But around 7 months daycare said DS didn't seem satisfied with just his bottles and suggested I send either purees or more milk. I didn't really have more milk to send so purees it was. At that point he wasn't really getting a lot of food from BLW and I WOH so I wasn't in a position to nurse on demand like a lot of stuff says. I think if he had picked up solids quickly it would have been a different story but right now we're doing purees at daycare and finger foods at home and it's working really well. I often just purée the same stuff he's having at home to send in to daycare.

Our daycare wasn't ok with BLW at 6 months so I sent purees to school and we did solids at dinner.

DS is nearly 6 months and breastfed. I'll be returning to work when he's around a year old. I'm interested in trying baby-led weaning but since it requires letting the baby get used to solids at their own pace AND reduce milk intake at their own pace, I'm worried that even by 12 months, DS will still be very reliant on breastmilk and not well established on solids. This wouldn't be much fun for me (I don't want to pump at work!) or his grandmothers, who will be watching him.

How did you combine this aspect of BLW and returning to work? Did you include some spoon-feeding from the start? Thanks for your help!
