@T.H.O.U.: Well our first Thanksgiving didn't go as planned-he didn't even know what the food was and didn't really try to eat it when I gave him sweet potato fries/wedges. Traditional baby led weaning did not work do us so I started by using mashed sweet potato mixed with breast milk. Then I took out the milk and started making them a thicker consistency.

Thanks, everybody! Maybe we will set some aside from what we are making on Thanksgiving and bake them plain in wedges/fries so he can pick them up. I just can't wait to see what he does with them.

First times were mashed. Now I steam carrot stick size and he loves it. Next time I make some I'll try roasted.

I made some the other day that I think would be the perfect size and texture for DS when we start him on solids. I cut them into tiny cubes, shook them around in a teeny dab of virgin coconut oil, then roasted them for 30 minutes at 350. I will have to experiment with making them without oil and see how they turn out!

Sweet potatoes are my LOs fave! The first few times we gave them to her, we did wedges roasted with olive oil. They were really easy for her to handle and eat. Now we do wedges, circles, and baked mush with a spoon. She'll eat them however we give them to her ;)

This was actually LO's favorite first food. I cut into wedges and bake with a very light drizzle of olive oil. She scraped the potato off the skin and loooved it. I started roasting most veggies after that because she likes the texture a lot more than steamed.

I'd probably bake/roast until they're really tender and mushy. Let them cool to room temperature, smash them up a little, and let her go at them. They're kind of stringy, so I imagine it's easier to pick up.

We are planning to give LO his first food on Thanksgiving - sweet potatoes! But, how should we prepare them? I have seen people bake them in spears that the baby could pick up, but I always pictured just roasting them until they were soft and kind of scooping the mush onto baby's tray.

How did you serve sweet potatoes as a first food?
