The failed 1st epi was not ideal, lol, but I had such a wacked out sense of time that it felt like it was only about 10 minutes until they re did it and it worked, even though it was actually like an hour. @highwire: We hired her because I wanted to go med free. She didn't end up being able to meet us at our apartment, as I had to go to the hospital relatively soon after labor started. She was great in helping me remember to breathe and to relax during the contractions. However, that stopped working when I had to lie in bed. She was also the one who kind of suggested that I get an epidural/think about asking for one, as it could take a while for anesthesia to get there. I was a little surprised at that, but it ended up being the right decision for me. She also was great support for DH and I in terms of keeping us company and answering questions. She also helped get LO latched immediately after birth. I will say that there was a bit of a power struggle between my doula and my labor nurse--the nurse seemed to resent having the doula there and didn't seem too fond of her suggestions/questions. And the doula also seemed to get a bit defensive/confrontational. All in all, it was really nice having her there, but not a necessity.
