@ValentineMommy: That's kind of what I thought but this doctor is kind of a hippy (asked us multiple times if we were sure we wanted to circumcise) and realllllllllly stresses healthy eating!

I wouldn't trust the scans. My ds1 measured in the middle throughout my whole pregnancy and was over 9 pounds at birth. He was huge.

This one was measuring smaller up until a few week ago, and now I'm measuring two weeks ahead.

It's just an estimate and I doubt your diet has much to do with it at 18w, unless you're REALLY overdoing it.

@wrkbrk: nope, he was around 17% at birth. He was a little early, but I still don't think he would have been gigantic if he'd cooked a little longer. He's in the 80ish% now at a year

Accuracy of weight estimates on ultrasound are notoriously incorrect. I've seen them right on and pounds too high or low. I wouldn't worry!

My daughter measured really large at the 18 week scan. Like above 99%. They didn't say anything to me about my diet. And she was born 39 weeks at 8 pounds - so I guess she was a little large but not huge.

It was later in my pregnancy, but at 32 weeks DS measures about 85% and the US tech essentially said my baby was huge. I was really upset and asked my OB if I was eating too much or doing something else wrong. He told me not to worry and that 85% just meant bigger than average but well within normal range. Ultimately I'm pretty sure the measurements we're a little off, DS was 6lbs 14oz at 37 weeks.

I have almost the same story as @macintosh: except I DID have GD. 8lb 13oz baby at 39 weeks and he always measured 2-3 weeks ahead on ultrasounds. I have family history of diabetes as well and I was worried I'd have it again for LO2, but nope!

I don't think you should worry just yet! The ultrasounds were correct with my first (and we'll see in August for my second, but he's measuring a lot smaller so far), but I know a LOT of people who had babies that were way off of what the ultrasounds said. And a lot can change in the next 20+ weeks!

I didn't have this happen, but as far as carb consumption... I wouldn't think it has THAT much to do with his size unless, as PP mentioned, GD is a concern. I ate a ton of carbs because they helped ease my nausea (like, a bagel every day for breakfast, salami sandwiches a few times a week, pasta for dinner at least once a week). It affected MY weight gain, but baby came out at 40+1 weighing 7lbs 11oz.

I don't remember the exact percentage but DS1 measured large at my 20 week anatomy scan. I remember googling the weight. He did turn out to be quite large and I was not diagnosed with GD (though I did have it in my second pregnancy). However my husband was also a 10 pound baby so I'm sure it was partially genetics and I wonder if I developed GD later on.

I agree with @MrsADS not to worry yet. My son consistently measured ahead / large. I failed the 1 hr GD screening by 1 point and passed the 3 hr with flying colors. My OB always told me everything was measuring perfectly and not to worry and he turned out to be 8lbs even at birth...so not tiny, but not huge. As a toddler he is consistently in the high 90s for height and 80s for weight even though I'm not that big (my DH is 6'2" though). I think the measurements are imperfect (have seen so many cases where the ultrasound is crazy off!) and some kids are just bigger than others.

I would totally not sweat it and definitely not adjust your diet unless you know you need to! (i.e., GD) My baby was measuring 80th percentile around 20 weeks and 89th percentile at 27 weeks! I was convinced I had GD. Well, I passed my test with flying colors. My doctor said babies are just different sizes! And, I just had a growth ultrasound at 30 weeks and now he's in the 55th percentile. So, it can change. (And, I have eaten a lot of carbs and gained a lot of weight!)

@wrkbrk: I do second that the scans can be really far off. We were told our's was 4lb something, and exactly 48th percentile just a week ago. She came out 5lb7, which is somewhere in the 90's. So wrong in the wrong direction for you, but still a good example of the margin of error on these things.

@macintosh: Thanks for your story. I am a little overweight as well (BMI is in the overweight range). He told me to aim for gaining 20 pounds total during pregnancy. I have gained 5 so far.................I have heard that the scans can be off quite a bit. Yikes I hope my carb consumption isn't hurting this little fellow!! I will have to seriously watch that.

@Torchwood: Not yet - I asked the doctor about this as my mom has diabetes (this is my first pregnancy). He said they do the test at the normal time and not to worry much now. ?? I hope it's not a sign of GD :/ I have been worried about that because of my mom (and because I eat pretty many carbs let's be honest).

@wrkbrk: My guy measured big at 20 weeks and every growth scan after that. I didn't have GD. The day he was born he measured over 9 lbs on the ultrasound. He was born 8lbs 13 oz at 39 weeks. I was told by a doctor friend that the measurement can be off by as much as 20%, especially if it's only one scan.

I'm sure you'll have a GD screening soon. As long as that checks out I wouldn't worry. Other than telling me to watch my weight gain in the first place (I was already overweight) they never said anything about my diet.

Have you done any kind of GD screening yet? If your blood sugar is wonky, it can make for a bigger baby. Normally that doesn't kick in until later, but if you have any underlying prediabetic stuff going on it could have already. They had me do a screening around 16 weeks or so since I had had GD before, but it was fine. Screened positive for it at 28 weeks.

Hi all -

I went for my anatomy scan today at 18w4d. The doctor said our little guy is in the 86th percentile. He suggested I cut back on my carb consumption (!).

Anyone else been in this spot? Does my diet affect his growth like that?? I will do what the doctor said but now I am worried about an especially large baby. I had assumed he would be small - normal because I was 6 pounds 6 ounces at birth.

Any ideas?

ETA: Everything in the scan checked out fine! Forgot to mention that - the most important thing! :)
