We started with an audio monitor and then my husband was always so worried when our first started turning over so I got a video monitor. It's so nice to be able to see your LO sleeping w/o having to go into their room. When we had our second, I bought a new monitor (motorola one) that has pan and zoom and you can talk to your baby and you can add up to 4 cameras. I'd like to add a third in our basement to watch them while they are playing later on. We have two audio and two video monitors. It's crazy.... but we use it all believe it or not!

@pastemoo: Oh wow, I didn't realize they can do that! That is awesome, you may have swayed me into the "do it" camp.

@cvbee: Good point!

We have a tiny house, smaller than yours. We started out with an audio monitor. Even though you can hear lo screaming from anywhere in the house, I like to know if she's just up and making noise.... so I can get to her room before she starts to cry.

When she turned 8 months we decided to get a video monitor. She was moving around a lot and her limbs would get caught in her crib. I wanted to be able to see her to know what she was crying about because if I went in there for no reason during nap time she gets all worked up, and its a big mess. We're very happy with the video monitor, it was the cheap one, just $75.

My house is small, and we can hear him anywhere.

But I still regret not getting a monitor, because when we travel, we end up in bigger houses and feel obligated to socialize where other people are, sometimes out of ear-shot.

We have a tiny apartment and I can hear him scream from ANYWHERE in the house... but I decided to get an angelcare monitor after someone posted that her baby stopped breathing and they caught it and saved the baby because the monitor beeped.
I sleep much easier now---and we can watch louder movies, too!

FWIW: The motion sensor has gone off 5 times... 1 I heard the baby gasp at the warning beep, 1 I am unsure what happened, but we jumped up quickly and he was fine when we got there... and the other 3 all happened during the same nap and he was turning really pale with blue lips and just wasn't breathing well. Really glad to have that in the house--got us to wake him when he wasn't breathing enough.

(He was born with meconium in his lungs and an infection so they told us at the hospital to be careful about his breathing. We already had our monitor at that point).

ETA We don't have video.

I never registered one and didn't use one until LO was 9months old. At 9 months I got one (after a harrowing experience peeking in on her and accidentally waking her up - awful!) and honestly have no idea how I lived without one! It's so helpful to see what your LO is up to~

ETA: OMG, I totally misread your questions - I assumed you were talking about a VIDEO MONITOR. We had an audio monitor since birth, which we found helpful to have in our kitchen. We got our video monitor when LO was 9months.

I go back and forth about whether we should register for one. Our house isn't that large -- about 1,500 square feet, all one floor. The baby's room will be right across the hallway from ours. However, I'm thinking we might not be able to hear the baby if we're in the living room with the tv on, or when we're sleeping (lol like I'll ever sleep but you know what I mean).

I'd like to hear both sides, whether you registered for one (with a smaller house), or did not and your experience with that. Also, is an audio monitor enough, or did you do video?
