@nana87: we decided on the Levana Astra that @Mamaof2: suggested and it's only $99 on Amazon right now! Only on night 2 of use but it is SO MUCH better than the foscam!

@nana87: I will update this thread once we try them out and decide. I really think it's nuts that all monitors don't come with VOX!

Oooh these are intriguing! We have a foscam and it pops on with every little noise, and in am nyc apt there are lots of little noises! Once the heat goes on, there's a steam pipe in the nursery that is going to keep making the monitor come on, and I'm never going to sleep again...maybe it's time for a new/better monitor!

@babybean404: Ok well it works! I feel dumb! Apparently I have been using Auto Mute and not VOX - with VOX on the monitor DOES turn off as well as the sound until it senses a noise!

We have the Levana Astra (http://www.amazon.com/Levana-Digital-Monitor-Intercom-32006/dp/B00AAJNHA6) and are very happy with it. The voice-activation feature works on both sound & video and you can set the sensitivity level for it to turn on.

We have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Infant-Optics-Digital-Monitor-Vision/dp/B0052QYLUM#productDetails

You have to set it in VOX mode to get the screen to turn off. It has a few different modes - I leave the video on when I'm awake and set it so the sounds kicks on if she makes noise. We usually leave it in the same place plugged in, so battery life isn't such a big deal. Our babysitter used to keep it unplugged with her for at least three hours, and the low battery light wasn't even on when we got home.

@BlueWolverine: that sounds like the holy grail of monitors!!! My daughter is pretty noisy in her sleep so I just need one that will kick in when she's awake and crying. Which infant optics model do you have?

@babybean404: I also have the Infant Optics and mine does shut off video in VOX mode. That said, there's been a time or two when it didn't kick on when LO started making some noise. But that has been VERY seldom. And she wasn't anywhere close to full volume. I'm really happy with it.

Thank you! I think I'm going to take Foscam up on their offer to send me another unit. If the next one has the same issues I'll send it back and get the Infant Optics.

@runnerd: I guess I could turn it away from me and cover it at night, but what about battery life during nap times in the day? I worry that the screen being on would kill the battery really fast?

@babybean404: yep! I was weary with all the reviews but its been fine for us - no issues with Wi-Fi , no issues having to reconnect the camera and monitor every night. I hate that its super cheap feeling but it works great for us!

Oh the only thing I don't like is that the video screen stays on all the time - even when the voice goes off you can still see the screen so I have to point it away from me - very bright! - my old summer infant one would go black after a minute or so which I preferred.

I'm searching for a monitor that has voice activation/"VOX" and can screen out the white noise machine. I'd like something that will turn on only when the baby cries! Is there anything like that out there???

I'd prefer a video monitor. I'm having a hard time wading through the Amazon reviews to find something that has VOX and is reliable.

I currently have a foscam monitor but it has shut itself off twice in the middle of the night and I no longer trust it.
