@winniebee: another reason to have one is for sleep training, if you end up going down that path. It's really useful to be able to see what the babe is doing without opening the door, etc. That's another reason why a real camera is better, the dark display is faaarrr superior to the dinky ones in baby video monitors.

@Boogs: yeah...every time I try to search for anything nothing comes up as far as threads...I wondered if that was just me, or if I was doing it wrong.

@winniebee: When I search for threads stuff does't really come up either. I have better luck using Google for some reason. Can't wait to see what you decide on and how you like it.

we have the Summer Infant BabyTouch (same as Boogs) and LOVE it. We used to have an older SI one, but it was analog and - to be blunt - the reception sucked in our NYC apartment. We have a house now, and the range on the BabyTouch is incredible. We frequently travel with it as well, so I can attest to the range. Also - it runs on battery or plug in for travel, in case you cant plug it in for a bit.

@Boogs: Thanks! When I searched for threads (and in general when I search for threads...) these didn't come up!

@looch: Not sure. My husband thinks video monitors are unnecessary but my thought is why not?

@theknest: I have read really good things about this one!

We have these http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Fisher-Price-Dreamsicle-Monitor/dp/B001TR2D6M/ref=dp_cp_ob_ba_title_3/184-6234522-0563733 - they are great for long-range and the battery life is really great too.

We have the Summer Infant Baby Touch Digital Color Video Monitor and we really love it:

http://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Touch-Digital-Monitor/dp/B004B762AK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329162062&sr=8-1

It also has up to 400' range and a feature where you can talk for the monitor to the baby wherever they are.

Do you need/want a video monitor? I'd suggest going the way of a Foscam, so you can view it on your phone or laptop. It's not that bulky and the quality is so much better than a traditional video monitor.

Which one did you get/are you getting? Why?

I'm looking for a long range one (not b/c I plan on leaving LO in the house for extended periods...we actually only have a tiny condo!) because MIL's summer home (where we spend a lot of time) is very big and I want to have plenty of range there.
