@HappyBaker: I think it has more to do with him settling on his curve. 8.5 lb is a decent sized baby at birth. Are you and your DH relatively small people?

The other thing to consider is that FF babies tend to be a little slower putting on weight in the beginning but catch up later on as their digestive track matures. As long as he's gaining and is happy, I'd say follow your gut.

@HappyBaker: My LO was only drinking around 20-22 oz, and my doctor said it was ok. Her weight gain did slow down a bit also, but our ped did not seem concerned at all.

@Mrs Green Grass: I didnt know you could add more formula power per oz. Everything I've read said to follow the instructions/measurements.

DD1's growth chart looks very similar to yours and @adira and she didn't settle into her growth curve until later. My husband and his entire family are also on the slim side so my pedi chalked it up to genetics too. Maybe the doctor is being overly cautious and just wants to make sure? But based on those numbers and feedings, your lo sounds great to me!

My son was/is a slow gainer but he's totally healthy and my doctor is not stressed about it. My son also wouldn't take a drop over 4oz until his 3 month growth spurt and then suddenly took 5oz at a time overnight. We dropped to 6 feedings at that point and it made life easier.

Thanks everyone, you have talked me off the freak out ledge and I really appreciate it!

I feel like anytime a DR questions whether you are feeding your LO enough I immediately take it super personally / get upset that this is something I am doing wrong.

@HappyBaker: His numbers look okay to me! But I'm definitely not a doctor. I also wonder if your doctor is looking at the CDC chart instead of the WHO chart, since you mention your LO has only had breast milk up to this point. Breastfed babies grow at a different rate than FF babies, I believe. I think the next few months will be telling, but I would think as long as he's growing and he doesn't seem hungry or dehydrated, etc., then he's probably doing just fine! <3

Geez I think your doctors might be over reacting. He's gaining slowly, but he's gaining. And that ounce intake sounds right on track to me for his age.

Seems pretty okay to me! DD is 4 mo and she's 13 lbs 13 oz. She is now gaining slower than she did before, but our ped said as long as she is going along her curve and is growing proportionately she is fine!

@Adira: Thanks that is really helpful, and your LO's numbers are actually sort of similar to ours, so maybe he is just settling to his curve.

Birth - 8lbs 8oz (80%)
4 Days old - 8lbs 2oz (65%)
2 weeks - 8lbs 4oz (54%)
1 month - 9lbs 1oz(33%)
2 months - 10 12oz (13%)
3 months - 12lbs 3oz (10%)

I'm curious what is considered "enough"? Is your LO actually LOSING weight? Or just gaining weight slowly? Can you give us the numbers?

I've heard that babies don't settle onto a growth curve position until around 6 months, and that was definitely true for my eldest. Here was his stats if this helps:

Birth: 8 lbs 14 oz (90th percentile)
3 Days: 7 lbs 15 oz (65th percentile)
2 Weeks: 8 lbs 14 oz (55th percentile)
2 Months: 11 lbs 13 oz (40th percentile)
4 Months: 14 lbs 2 oz (19th percentile)
6 Months: 16 lbs (16th percentile)

And he's consistently been around the 15th percentile since 6 months and he's now 2 years. Hope this helps!

@Mrs Green Grass: Yea and until very recently it was all BM which I thought they needed less of anyway. We've tried giving him 5oz bottles but then he just ends up spitting up a lot, so I think fortifying what he is already drinking will probably work better if we need to go that route.

@HappyBaker: that's actually a pretty decent amount! My Lo took much. They will probably also look into whether there are any issues causing you LO not to absorb all he's eating.

@Mrs Green Grass: 24-28 oz, depending on how the feeds end up spacing out. Good to know about the fortifying, that sounds easy to do.

What's his total intake in the day?

The doc will probably have you fortify his feeds. Formula is basically 20 calories an ounce, but you can put in more powder to increase the calories. My LO was on 24 cal feeds forever and when we switched to WCM we (still) add whole milk powder. Because my lo is so small (he was a preemie) we had much more frequent weight checks at the doc, but nothing else really happened since he always gained. When he was little he typically gained 3/4lb a month which is less than average, but it was pretty consistent.

DS is 3 months old, and we just had a weight check because at his 2 month appointment his growth curve had dropped too much. The weight check was just with a nurse so we literally just went in, had him weighed, and left. I just got a call that the DR now wants to meet next week because he has dropped even further and she is concerned.

He has been bottle fed pumped milk since 2 weeks old, and we are switching to 100% formula within the next few weeks (unrelated to this issue, I had decided to stop pumping because I wasn't producing enough / hated it!).

Other than the weight gain issue he is an incredibly happy, easygoing baby. He is sleeping and eating great, and is very social / trying to grab things / etc as he should be.

Does anyone else have experience with this / advice on what I can expect? He is drinking 4oz every 3 hours during the day and has no problems with reflux or anything like that. He really seems fine he just isn't gaining enough!
