@NYCaliMama: i know...now i'm thinking perhaps i should get some formalized training and then do some baby nurse gigs! this is in the future of course...when my LO is grown. that is some good income!

My cousin did this with her first baby and maybe with her second. The baby nurse helped her and the babies get on a schedule for feeding and sleep in a week. Apparently the nurse was very focused and rigid. I don't know if this is something we would do--well, I know we wouldn't because we couldn't afford that price tag or if we could we would spend it on something else--but her kids put themselves to sleep even as babies. She could put them in their crib and they would fall asleep shortly after. She is a very routine person, so it helped her by having her kids on a schedule.

We are expecting twins and debated whether or not to hire a baby nurse (or night nurse). A lot of our friends and colleagues were strongly encouraging us to hire help. But then I went to my prenatal classes at the hospital for parents expecting multiples and most of moms I met there had NO idea what a night nurse even was! I also met other moms of multiples who just had their mom or MIL help for a few weeks, and they did just fine.

After much debate, we decided that we'd rather use the money to buy a house and we will just have family members helping us for the first two months. It's gonna be rough in the beginning for sure but I will keep telling myself that it will only get better and better as the babies grow older.

Twenty grand for two months work is some wage, isn't it?! Can't say I would pay it. We'll have some family help as we need it, mostly over the first six weeks or so, but I really want them to take household crap rather than baby duty. My brother lives next door and he'll hopefully be doing laundry runs, giving the dogs a walk. MIL will bring out or make dinner sometimes, and I'm thinking about hiring a cleaner to come in once a fortnight just to be sure the place doesn't get totally vile... But seriously, what's the point having kids and then just bringing a stranger into your home to do everything with them? Especially if you can afford that kind of money- those people, I'd imagine, are not forced financially to go straight back to work.

No way I would do that. My former nanny self is way too stubborn to ever hire a baby nurse or nanny lol. The past few families I worked for hired baby nurses, and they found them useful though.

My mother is a nurse in mother/baby and will be coming out when our little guy is about a month old to help out. My dad will be coming out right when the baby is born, so we will have plenty of help.

@Andrea: ah yes... for twins. but that is still a lot because I know nannies for twins don't make that much either. I guess because they tend to work nights it really makes a difference... And these must be some pretty experienced baby nurses with great track records! but I'm with you... I'd try to get family to help here and there and I'd tough it out too and spend the money elsewhere!

That sounds like a lot of money for a baby nurse? does that mean some baby nurses can make 10k a month?

WOW. That's steep for just 2 months. I'd probably fly my mom here for a month and pay for her travel expenses + thank you cash. And then hire a mommy's helper.

Well, my friend that's expecting triplets is moving into her mils house for a while after she starts bed rest. She has to buy 3 of everything, she cant afford a baby nurse too.

Id probably ask my mom to stay with me for a while.

We know a bunch of people expecting twins and everyone is hiring a baby nurse for a two months. This is costing them $20,000. Worth it? I think I would skip it and just tough it out. I'd rather use the money for something else. How about you?
