@plantains, @LindsayInNYC, @Modern Daisy: I found it was nearly always women or older men offering their seats. Younger white men in suits? Never. It definitely prompted me to give my husband (white English man) a talking to about making sure to give up his seat - lol.

@jaclyn: When I lived in London I used to commute home with my colleague. When she was pregnant I would literally run onto the tube and claim a seat for her because otherwise she generally wouldn't get one :(

i'm a new yorker living in london and i have one. my fiance actually picked it up for me because he says that it's difficult as a guy to gauge whether a woman is pregnant or not and he doesn't want to insult her by offering his seat if she's not.

to be honest, i can't say it's made that much of a difference. i've probably had about 5 women and 1 man offer up their seats and i've refused every time because i haven't needed it. i like to think maybe it'll help me not to get pushed and shoved but it doesn't seem to be working for that either.

@Modern Daisy: @LindsayInNYC: YES!!! Frigging douches, when I was 8 months pregnant I ended up losing my rag with this one hipster twit who pushed me and started complaining about people taking up too much room on the train.

Women tend to be so much nicer about offering a seat.

I think this is kind of a cute idea. The problem is that everyone's always staring at their smartphones and not looking up, so the button would never get noticed!

@Modern Daisy: I HATE THAT! Then they have this smug "I win" look on their face. No, you did not win. You just stole a seat from a female! Ugh, it drives me NUTS!

@plantains: Yes!! I get shoved every day on my way home during rush hour. And grown men literally push past me when they see an open seat, it disgusts me.

I doubt it would work in NYC because people just pretend like they don't see you. Plus I can never even get close enough to the seats that people would see me and offer one. By the time I get on the subway is always packed and I'm smushed in by the door.

Never heard of it... I don't really worry about offending anyone...I just say "would you like to sit?" They can either say yes thanks or no.

I live in London and would never wear one of these. I literally cringe when I see them.

Ok you're pregnant, why do you need a special badge to let everyone know? If people are good natured, they'll offer you a seat. If they don't your really going to brandish the badge?

Also, I've traveled on the tube with a condition that made it unbearable not to sit down, but was not visible.

How do we know the people sitting down don't need the seats even more than us, even though they don't have a special badge?

Lastly, it's a badge. I'm over 10... What price dignity?!

I don't see it happening here. I like the idea of it, but it's still... weird. Like, do old people get one too? I have frequently wondered if someone is old enough that I should offer them a seat, or if they would be offended that I called them old, same as wondering if a woman is pregnant or just heavy or bloated. Plus, I like to think that often, the problem isn't that people see someone who really needs a seat and ignores them, but that they don't see them-- either too many people are in the way (in between the seated person and the preg/elderly person) or they are engrossed in their book or whatever.

I've yet to be offered a seat, at 21 weeks, but in a winter coat, I do not blame anyone. Yet. :)

I've never seen a woman wearing one here. Granted, I don't live in London but I've been several times and never have and I've definitely seen pregnant women. I had no idea they did this.

This article states that pregnant women who ride the tube can get a badge so people know they are pregnant and so they can get a seat. That's pretty neat!

"Middleton, the wife of Prince William, was gifted a "Baby on Board" badge by London Underground chief operating officer Howard Collins, according to the UK's Mirror. The badge is said to be worn by pregnant women riding the Tube to ensure they are given a seat, and to avoid any embarrassing gaffes should a non-pregnant woman be mistaken for needing a seat for that reason."

Can anyone see this happening in NYC or DC? :)
