@looch: haha same here I have like a 3 step program to gently ease her down. I have a swing and a rnp but she doesn't stay asleep in them for long!

This was my son, I had a system down though, with propping up my arms using pillows, to eventually laying down with my son across my chest.

I tried everything, nothing worked, in hindsight, I shouldn't have made my life difficult and I should have tried a swing for naps.

@Freckles: that's exactly what I want! I don't know if that's full on sleep training but I just need her to be able to at least sleep by herself majority of the nap!

@Smurfette: ugh I know, I guess not full out sleep train but I don't want to be holding her for all her naps! But it's interesting that yours just figured out how to sleep on their own once you are not there.. So maybe I don't need to prep her as much? I'm just worried for when I go back to work!

@snowjewelz: yep, I was able to leave her in swaddled without issues. But after "training" her to sleep in the crib, I didn't use the swing very often (except during regressions).

8 weeks is really young to sleep train. Especially cause the 4 month sleep regression is going to undo it.

LO would nap on us. We couldn't put her down at night till she was dead asleep for 20 mins. She learned quickly she had to put herself to sleep at day care. Then we sleep trained at 4 months for nights and naps at home. She had another regression and we had to do it all over.

@Freckles: that's great! I'm planning to nap/sleep train at 8 weeks too. So after your week or training you were able to just swaddle and leave her in swing?

With LO1 she had to be held for all of her naps! If I wasn't holding her, she was in the carrier or in the stroller. But at the 8-10 week mark I hunkered down for 1 week and nap trained her (had to wait for my in laws to leave since they were the biggest enablers!) No CIO but consistently putting her in the bassinet for naps and loosely going with the EASY schedule. A no worries about holding her now!

Right now A naps in a rocker/bouncer. With LO 1, I would swaddle her and have her nap in the swing...she could nap for 2 hours in that thing!

@Meridian: I'm obsessed about sleep also. Like you, I had to basically hold my baby for all naps all the time, and night sleep was only a little better. I would rock her to sleep and as soon as I set her down she would wake up. It was so hard for me. They say you can't spoil a newborn, but I disagree. It probably depends on the baby, but at 9 weeks, I felt like my baby knew what was going on, and had gotten accustomed to being held so that's what she wanted. She would cry and then look around to see if I was coming.

I wanted to train her to sleep in her crib, without being held. She was still swaddled. I basically rocked her to a heavy drowsy state and set her down in her crib for night and naps. It sucked at first. The first night she cried for about 2 hours. Then it just started getting better. I gave it 3 days. It was hard but worth it. Now I bounce her to a pretty slept state and let her down. Sometimes she will let out a protest cry, but almost always she just goes to sleep after that. Since she'll start rolling soon, I'm starting to wean her off the swaddle. Today we did 1 arm out naps and it wasn't too bad.

With respect to self soothing, I think the whimpering/ crying is prob how she soothes herself.

@Pumpkin Pie: ooh, I just posted a question yesterday if you could sleep train a swaddled baby! Would you mind elaborating on that?

What was your biggest sleep problem(s) that you were trying to overcome? Which method did you use (check & console? extinction? Gradual extinction?) How did your LO self sooth if swaddled and couldn't use their hands? How many nights did it take? How is her sleep now?

Sorry for all the Qs, I'm obsessed with sleep/sleep training right now!!

My kid stopped nursing to sleep really early on (like, 2 weeks old), and he stopped falling asleep in the car, stroller etc in the first month of his life, so I feel you. Bouncing/rocking was all I had. He hated the swaddle (or so we believed) so we had stopped early on, but once he stopped nursing to sleep his naps were hell, so I put him back into a tight swaddle and rocked till sleeping and then transferred to the swing. He slept exclusively in the swing for 3.5 months.

I mean, it's not like it was easy -- he needed quite a bit of rocking and his naps were crap for some time (he napped for 28 minutes on the dot for months) BUT I got a precious 28 minutes of free time several times a day.

I held my son for all of his naps but it somehow took care of itself. His dad and grandparents just put him down and he slept. He probably sensed that I wanted to cuddle as much as he did! I say enjoy it for now.

I held my DD for the majority o naps for her first 15 weeks of life (by choice because I wanted to enjoy every minute with her.) My nanny had to hold her sometimes until she hit around 4 months and my nanny transitioned her to the crib. There was no real "training" or cio involved. She was just ready on her own.

@mamimami: This. The 4th trimester (I'm about 2/3 of the way through it) is brutal. Whenever it's particularly trying, I do remember it's a season, and that I should try and enjoy the floppy snuggles now while I can! Already my son is holding his head up and arching away from me, and I know my days of snuggling might be numbered.

@snowjewelz: I've been dealing with some of this, and here are a few things that have helped. I do commiserate...about 3-4 weeks ago I was almost in tears whenever I had to put him down during the day because it was SUCH A STRUGGLE (it once took 6 hours to get a nap! 6!), and it somehow seems to be getting easier. I bet I just jinxed it by saying it, but.....it should get easier!

1) Our pediatrician said it takes them about 20 minutes of REM sleep to get into deep sleep. Once in deep sleep you should definitely be able to put her down without her waking up. You then might have to pick her back up once her sleep cycle turns over (I believe the entire cycle is 50 minutes max if it's uninterrupted?), but that should give you at least 30 minutes of a break?
2)I let my son fall asleep on me, and then will move him right next to me on the couch. I keep hand on him (this is key!), as I think the pressure/human contact is a comfort to him. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but it often will bridge the gap and I can eventually move my hand once he's settled
3)My son easily gets overstimulated, so I have blackout shades in his nursery so it looks like nighttime in there all the time. If we're in the living room and it isn't dark enough, I'll even use my hand to shade his eyes. If K needs darkness, too, it couldn't hurt to try!
