@BoogieBea: thanks! I'm assuming it eventually just got better? I'm tired of waking her in the night to change her diaper after hearing her poop!

Hi there. I think you already have gotten some really good feedback. I just wanted to say that I went through this with my son as welll. I played around with how I fed him, when I fed, etc. Then I did a complete elimination diet. I was, literally, eating just rice cakes for a while. That period was really stressful for me, being a first time mom. Turns out he has no allergies (even to this day - he's now 4), so perhaps his digestive system was just maturing. Hang in there! Hope you're able to find the culprit.

@Baby Boy Mom: thank you. How did you discover the allergy was egg? Did you do elimination diet? I'm menu planning to cut out dairy and soy but am wondering if it's just better to do total elimination to avoid having to keep trying different things. I can sometimes get the poop back to yellowish (short term) using block feeding, but it's still watery. This makes me think allergy is more likely?

@anbanan15: thanks! I thought I was doing well, but I realized there was dairy/soy in things I thought were safe. I need to just menu plan, I think. I hope it all works out well for you! Sorry you are going through it again.

@Greentea: thank you. I'm not going to make myself crazy about it. I think I might as well just check for dairy/soy to know. If it doesn't help, I think I'm just going to let it go. It's just so weird how it changed seemingly out of nowhere! She doesn't see bothered but I'm constantly slathering on the diaper cream and coconut oil (when using cloth) bc she's red from it. It's hard not to worry!

I think you already got a lot of great responses, but yes if it's not oversupply the most likely cause of green poop in an EBF baby is a food allergy. This was my first LO's main symptom and he ended up being allergic to egg. Only after we "diagnosed" we started picking up on more subtle symptoms. (IMHO I don't think this is something you should ignore just because LO is gaining well).

@mjane: @Zbug: I also take this route. If LO is happy and gaining weight and there is no blood... don't worry. DD had some crazy poos right before starting solids. .. like her body was ready for them and she was also teething...

@Zbug: Here is a good resource to print out and take shopping with you. It lists the terms you can typically find dairy and soy listed as on labels: http://www.foodallergy.org/document.doc?id=133

We are going through this again with our second. First round of eliminations was dairy, soy, egg and peanut per our pedi, then they told me wheat/gluten and anything else that we feel causes a problem. Since this is our second go around and DS reacted to so many thing we decided it was best if I just went straight to a total elimination diet (TED) since that is what worked for us in the past to get to a nice baseline. However, I wouldn't recommend a TED unless it was your last resort.

@GreenThumb: thanks! I do think I have fast letdown and maybe also oversupply. I've just been a little hesitant about extending the amount of time I use for block feeding in case I'm wrong and hurt my supply. I think you're right that I should talk to a LC.

@Anagram: I am going to give it a shot to see and would love some tips.

@Zbug: My LO had very watery, loud poops that ranged in color from yellow to green for quite awhile before I got my oversupply issue (foremilk/hindmilk imbalance) under control (around 2-3 months). I had to block feed for several weeks before I saw a change, but eventually it got better.

I found this info on KellyMom to be really helpful:
http://kellymom.com/health/baby-health/m2m-green-stools/
http://kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/fast-letdown/

LO had several symptoms of the fast letdown, too:
Gag, choke, strangle, gulp, gasp, cough while nursing as though the milk is coming too fast
Pull off the breast often while nursing
Make a clicking sound when nursing
Spit up very often and/or tend to be very gassy
Dislike comfort nursing in general

You might also want to talk to a lactation consultant if your per isn't too helpful on the BF side of things.

E's poops turned watery for a while (lasted a few weeks) it started a week before her 2 month check up so we asked and she said it was totally normal. She was75-85% formula fed then, and they were brown/yellow. Not sure about the color but my ped wasn't at ALL concerned about the change to watery. Now they're back to being thicker/sometimes mucousy, with the occasional watery poop.

@Zbug: I posted a thread last week wondering if increase in poopy diapers is associated with teething and the consensus was yes! The bees said their pedi said it was because of all the extra saliva they're swallowing. I think pre-teething definitely counts! DS started sucking on his hand around 4 months when I thought I saw white lil buds on bottom, but nothing broke through until last week, but it was the top right tooth!

@Zbug: I just eliminated dairy and soy and that did the trick. Her bloody poo went away almost immediately and then the green went to yellow within about 2 days. She also started eating more (She used to cry when we tried to feed her), but she still mainly drinks her bottles while asleep (I exclusively pump so I knew it couldn't be a fore/hind milk issue).

Label reading is important. I never realized that soy lecithin is in EVERYTHING. If you decided to do it, lemme know and I'll give you my tips for finding foods.

@Alivoo01: I wish I could say I've been eating more veggies, but that's unfortunately not the case. Interesting about teething. DD has been drooling and sucking on her hands more lately. She's only three months but maybe preteething?

DS has had an increase in green poo lately also (but also increased in number of poopy diapers due to teething), but it doesn't seem to bother him so I haven't done anything yet. We'll occasionally get yellow, but mostly green. Could you be eating more veggies because I know that can turn your own poo and breastmilk green so maybe you're passing it on??

DS gets expressed milk at daycares so I know his green poo isn't a result of not getting enough hind milk.

@illumina: thanks. I had that thought so tried block feeding. It didn't seem to really help. I'm nervous about trying longer blocks because don't want it hurt my supply if it's really not oversupply. @Anagram: thank you and so sorry that happened to you! It seems like I should try changing my diet for a couple of weeks. Did you just eliminate dairy and soy or do the elimination diet?

Thank you all!! I really like our pediatrician for most things, but he's never seemed that knowledgable about BFing.

@Zbug: My LO has MSPI and always had VERY green stools, sometimes mucousy. I kept asking the doctor about it, who kept telling me it was normal, bf babies have stools of many colors, blah blah...but then her poops started being bloody and by then she had developed a feeding aversion.

Cutting the dairy and soy 100% from my diet turns her poops back to yellow but sadly, the damage with the feeding aversion was already done and even now at 6 months we have feeding issues.

So if you suspect, better to be proactive and eliminate for 2 weeks just to see. It can't hurt.

LO's poop has become very watery (maybe diarrhea?) the last couple of weeks. Sometimes still yellow/orange but frequently green. She went from having maybe one bowel movement a day to several, but they are all watery and loud. They often sound worse than they end up looking. I thought at first she might just have a little virus or something, but now I'm wondering of its a food allergy. Before they turned watery, they sometimes were thick and had some mucus. She's three months, is gaining weight and doesn't seem at all bothered by it all. Has anyone else had this? Should I try to cut dairy? See the pediatrician?

ETA I exclusively breastfeed her. I've thought perhaps oversupply but it doesn't look frothy and minimal block feeding hasn't seemed to make a difference.
