@NaturallyCathy: Glad I could help a little! We have the same problem with bannisters in our house (though not as beautiful and antique as yours!) I saw this attachment option also, that can use zip ties instead of the bracket things from the one I posted above - http://www.kidcogateshop.com/product/K100/KidCo-BabyPet-Gate-Mounting-Kit.html.

@NaturallyCathy: @prettylizy: lol glad to help! Yeah, we tried this one, but our posts are round and we really wanted to exhaust our options before drilling. For Livs safety, totally would have done it, but we ended up using a regular gate and zip-ties.

Be careful with any that require too much pressure mounting on the post, as too much will displace it. We ran into that and had to use a different bottom of the stairs one.

@MrsCB: That would solve one of my questions with @LivsMama: suggestion - how to attach her banister to banister design to the wall on the other side. With you suggestion, we'd be able to easily install one side to the wall and the other side to the banister. I like the curve shape for upstairs but I don't think it would be good for the downstairs part. I need two gates. And I wouldn't put the gate on the bottom step of the staircase but at the second step, so it'll be easier to install to the wall.

So if it was me, I would use a combination of this gate attached to the wall:
http://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?SKU=206608&

And this pressure mounting kit for the bannister:
http://www.buybuybaby.com/product.asp?SKU=14843906&

@Bao: Thanks :) I'm kinda in love with it too. There's so many little details like that in this house that I just can't get over. Like antique lights and door knobs and the likes. Like I said, STUPID excited over all of this.

There are some gates that use zip tie-like things around bannisters, and some use tension (though that might be difficult with your stairs). I think I've also seen a bigger gate in like a half circle that might work for you. I'll see if I can dig that one up.

Okay, what about something like this delux wooden swing gate. you could mount the hinge side to the wall above the second step, and then try to fasten the latches to one of the spindles somehow? In my mind using wireties (though I don't know how feasible it would actually be). If he's a seasoned climber I wouln't worry too much about 1 step, but you'll need something sturdy enough since he's into everything.

Usualy I pitch these ideas to DH and he brings them to life! lol!

We have antique stairs as well (our house was built in 1747 and the banisters are original) and there IS a stair gate that requires no drilling for square posts like yours. Let me see if I can find it. We had to rig one on ours because we didnt want to drill either

@prettylizy: He's a climber. Likes to climb the back of the couch, grab the sash of the window, and try to climb frog style up the window. And can actually get up pretty far! He's also been trying to climb into the Pack and Play from the outside and he's been having fun experimenting with steps lately (since we don't have them in our current house). I'm afraid DS, 13 months old, would be fearless and therefore give his mother a heart attack.

Is your LO a real mover? DD stays pretty much put and won't bother trying to climb the stairs if the gate is even leaning on them, but my BFF's little man is into and on everything. That would change my potential suggestions! lol!

So DH and I just signed on our new house yesterday (STILL SO EXCITED!) and we've already run into our first hiccup. The house was originally built in 1946 and while we aren't sure that the staircase is original to the house but we're 90% sure that is and we do know that it's antique and wood. Solid wood.

But since the bedrooms (or at least two of them) are upstairs and we'll be spending most of our time downstairs as a family, we really need to baby proof the steep stairs. DH doesn't want to drill into the wooden banisters but I don't see a way for us -not- to have to do that.

Has anyone else run into this problem? Any suggestions? Here's some pictures:
