Thanks for the input! Glad to know that what we're planning isn't drastically lacking. :-) When we do move to a home in the next 5 years we'll look at more permanent options again.

@lamariniere: Definitely believable. We had a sweet older woman who babysat us from birth, and she didn't baby-proof anything. She danger-proofed her babies by telling us what was what. We were little, but we knew Nana's rules, and that meant you don't get to open up cupboards and you don't get to touch the oven and all sorts of other things. She was never mean or stern about it, but we all understood. I don't believe that anyone of the children she watched was ever injured at her house.

Another apartment dweller here. We honestly didn't do much. Just outlet covers and tried to cover sharp corners on our radiations, but that was it. I know this sounds kind of unbelievable, but when DS became mobile around 10 months, I explained/told/showed him what he was not allowed to touch and that he couldn't go in the kitchen and he obeyed. Now that he is a toddler, we only have the outletts covered. He really does listen and obey and doesn't touch the things he isn't supposed to.

we live in an apartment we have a gate on the top of the stairs and a gate in the kitchen door. we have socket covers. we also have a play pen for her which we use if we really need to keep her away from something temporarily. Other than that I try to be around her all the time because we can't mount or anchor everything to the walls since some areas of the wall arent that sturdy anyway

First thing: circular baby gate. It doesn't last forever but it buys you some time.

DS is 20 months old and so far we have: outlet covers, anchored the TV to the cabinet it's in with straps, locked the cabinet doors under the sink, under the TV and in the bathroom. We put baby gates up in the doorways to the bedrooms, the doorway to the kitchen and at the stairs.
I did mount one baby gate. The walls are crap and I had to use the plastic things to anchor them, which I think will cost us our security deposit, but oh well. Because of the crap walls I haven't mounted anything else and am worried about furniture in his room, which is why he only has a crib, a PBK anywhere chair and toy chest so far.

So far all we have done is put outlet covers into the outlets, and used some padding on the edges of our media stand/coffee table/baseboards. I would like to anchor a large floor mirror we have to the wall, which I think I can do with picture hooks/wire. Other than that, I just make sure I"m always with him...we keep the bathroom doors closed, so we dont have to worry about him getting in there. He can't reach our tv, and we've moved everything that he could pull down on himself from the bookshelf out of reach--its a long low one, so I'm not worried about him pulling the shelf itself down on him. I don't plan on doing anything related to water heaters...

I was reading the swarm post on baby-proofing and it got me thinking that some of these things we aren't going to be able to do.

Things like socket covers and cabinet latches and that type of thing are going to be easy enough, and we don't have blinds, just curtains. I think that whoever moves into the neighboring apartment will be okay with having a babygate at the end of our hall (especially if I put it up before they get a new tenant, haha). However, turning down the water heater would turn it down for the other 4 apartments and would have to be a request through the LL. And anchoring things into our plaster and lath walls is going to be difficult to impossible due to the type of wall and the likelihood that it would ruin the walls (and still not secure anything well).

Any other apartment-living bees have any tips or products for baby-proofing that helped you keep your kiddos safe while not violating your lease provisions or damaging the apartment?
