It also could be a positioning problem. Maybe she's working really hard to stay latched in whatever position you're holding her, and she just gets tired. Try nursing in a more reclined position. Gravity helps her stay latched, and I've had a couple of friends say this position saved their nursing relationship.

@rahlyrah: hahaha, we're in the midst of the pulling Mama's teeth phase! Soooo annoying!!! Although it's better than the pinching the other nipple while nursing phase! That was the worst!

I agree that it could be her trying to get more milk.

K did this around the same age. It was really frustrating to me because I already had so much nipple trauma and this just added insult to injury.

I went to see my LC about it and she said dd was trying to trigger another letdown or faster flow. She encouraged me to switch sides whenever she started really fussing/tugging. There were times I would switch sides multiple times during one nursing session, but it did the trick. Pick asked my LC what to do if dd just kept it up and refused to nurse productively. Her words: "That's when you hand her to your husband, pour yourself a glass of wine and go take a hot bath." :)

I agree with @Adira that it is probably just a phase! B did this to for a while and he eventually just stopped. There was also a pop on/pop off phase, a hitting phase, a pinching arm fat phase, a pull on mommy's teeth phase, a pinch the other nipple phase...haha. These kids are quirky little creatures!

She didn't do this exactly, but for a long time she would pop on and off over and over again - it hurt like crazy! Then she switched to latching on and shaking her head vigorously. I think by about 6 weeks - 2 months she just got down to business and ate without playing.

@MrsH: Hmmm.... I can't remember how Xander was at six weeks. The distraction issue was later. BUT I do remember that we had an awful time nursing at six weeks to the point where I almost quit. The next week was a turning point for us and soooo much better! So if you can, just try to stick with it and hopefully she'll stop hurting you so much soon!! HUG!

@Pirouette: haha, yes, exactly! They want to be able turn around and look at other things and just expected the boob to follow!

@Adira: this exactly...she used to do this all the time and at some point just stopped. I never had an issue with supply but she'd just forget to open her mouth before pulling away. She just wanted to take it with her.

How old is your LO? Xander used to do this to me a ton, but I think it might've been a phase. I was lucky enough not have an issue with my supply, so for me, it was just because he was distracted while nursing and forget to unlatch before pulling away!

Mine used to do that - it hurt so bad! I used to say she treats my nipple like its taffy :P

I think my daughter did that if she was frustrated the milk wasn't coming out quickly enough. Maybe try massaging your breast while you are nursing and see if that helps?

Still trying to nurse LO before supplementing at each feeding. After a couple of minutes she starts to yank her head back with my nipple still firmly in her mouth. It hurts!

Is she just getting pissed because I don't have much milk? This is worse than her crying at my boobs :(
