Aaaw... I feel your pain. We're having a hard time ditching the swaddle too! Every time I tried w/o the swaddle he would wake up and then suck on his fingers and whine. Then as soon as I put it back on (just arms only b/c he's outgrown the miracle blanket) he'll fall asleep within a minute. And if I don't put it on tight enough and he breaks out he'll whine again. So so sad. I feel bad for him and for me! I think I'm just going to do whatever works for now and then ditch it when I sleep train him. I figured, he's going to cry anyway so might as well just do it once than two separate times.

I do, however, swing nap so he's only in the swaddle at night. I don't think that helps b/c he has motion to rely on. He does cry a little before falling asleep on the swing though. But he'll sleep between 1 - 4 hours on the swing. Kind of crazy on the 2+ hours though.

@pastemoo: he is miserable if he doesn't nap at least 1.5 hours. As much as I hate to do it, I have been having to put him in his bed and let himself cry to sleep because he won't sleep any other way.

We use his swaddle blanket at tuck it into the mattress on both sides (like a rubber band, or like the seaweed around a tamago nigiri sushi). His arms go over it.
It hasn't come untucked yet.

Kind of like @junebugmama but his feet stick out the bottom.

@Coco Bee: Sorry I'm just now getting back! I've been posting from my phone most of the time and it's not as easy as using my computer!

I want to say it took a couple of weeks for DS to get adjusted to non-swaddled naps. When we transitioned to a sleepsack, we also started using a stricter bedtime routine and nap routine.

For bedtime, he has a bath, we get him dressed, and put on his sleepsack. We turn off the lights, turn on the monitor & white noise machine, and then I sit in the rocker with DS. I rock him and sing two songs. His eyes are usually drowsy at this point but he's awake. Then, I get up and take him over to his crib. I tell him goodnight, to sleep well, I love him, & sweet dreams. I kiss him, lay him down, and leave the room. I do the same thing for naps with the exception of the bath.

I think it helped that we kept things the same for both nap time and bed time. He learned to associate the routine with sleep whether it was night time or not. I know you've heard this a million times, but look out for cues that he's tired. I would put DS down two hours after he woke up. He would usually start getting fussy and would rub his eyes.

@dagret: it's not actually a baby monitor, it's the foscam surveillance camera! I downloaded the cam viewer app for free and I can see him on there. Skippee did a guest post on it for the blog that goes over the pros/cons.
One thing is you have to be kinda tech savvy to get it all set up. DH did it for us and although he did it without major complications, we couldn't figure out how to set up the audio. So we use an audio monitor as well. Which I totally don't mind, esp because I don't have the camera on ALL the time. Only when I hear him rustling around, to check on him or if we're sleep training.

I kept swaddling for naps for a bit and did sleep sack at night. Then I had to stop swaddling all together and had to nurse her to sleep. Then I started doing the baby Whisperer's pick up put down method and now she can fall asleep on her own and is starting to nap longer than ever!

@Sweet T: it's so weird to me that he sleeps great at night unswaddled, but for naps he won't.

@sorrycharlie: yeah it's the arms I think. I don't, and haven't ever, swaddled his legs.

@junebugmama: how I used to do it was swaddle him, nurse him - he'd sleep in my arms then lay him in his crib. And it worked great. but now he rolls over even in his sleep.

I just put him to bed with no swaddle and he just fell asleep... we'll see how long this nap lasts :-P

We ditched the swaddle cold turkey when DS learned how to roll over while swaddled (4.5 months). We transitioned using a sleepsack. It was hard at first. He would wake at night and we'd have to go in and give him his paci. It didn't last long though!

hmm, I'm not really sure because even my nanny-LOs weren't swaddled so I don't have any experience. Does he like his arms being swaddled? I wonder if he'd like a sleepsack, if it's not just the arms - like if he enjoys being kind of cocooned?

@Coco Bee: It was actually the way our birthing class teacher suggested to do it after babies started rolling. It's also very convenient if he's fallen asleep in my arms, because I can just tuck him in, rather than risking him waking himself up because he is moving his arms, or me trying to swaddle him while he's already sleeping.

When DD started to do that, it made me too nervous to continue to swaddle. I started by leaving one arm out of the swaddle. I did that for a week, then took the other arm out, did that for a week, just swaddled her tummy for another week, and then took the swaddle away. She was about 4-5 months old.

Take the blanket and tuck it very tight under the edge of the mattress. So the blanket will be covering the bottom half all tucked in. Then fit him in there, like he's in a pocket. It will still be tight like a swaddle, but if he decides to roll over he'll be more free. Does this description make sense?
