This exact situation was us for about two months. I had every issue you mentioned from over supply, over active let down, latching issues you name it. My LO would cry bloody murder before and during every feeding and it would end up that she would be crying and I would be crying right along with her feeling like I was torturing her. To be honest nothing really worked for me besides time. We tried the before mentioned nipple shield and still use it and that seems to help. But positions didn't work, burping, letting the let down come onto a towel or pumping. Just know it can and will get better and hand in there. The older your little one gets I think the better they can handle it.

@Running Elley: Have you tried feeding him in a more upright position (like him sitting on your lap sort of), how about reclined (helps with fast letdown), or how about side lying?

No advice but just wanted to offer support... Nursing can be a total nightmare. Hope you get some answers soon and in the meantime it's great that he'll take s bottle of pumped milk so at least he's eating!

@Kemma: My LC does think that we both have thrush. I thought that may be the issue too but he takes the bottle fine. I'm sorry it's a struggle for you too!
@matador84: Love Kellymom! Thanks for that link!
@yellowbird: I'll ask my LC if she thinks a shield would help. I hadn't thought of that!
@winniebee: Thanks for the commiseration :) Exclusively
pumping does seem really taxing! I did it for E's first week
because of other issues and it was such a relief when I could
switch to bf again!
@Dapple Grey: It seems like the good feedings have been completely random! I can't find any clue as to why they worked unfortunately :( I just try every time and cross my fingers!
@hilsy85: Yeah he doesn't choke when he comes out and I can
tell it's not because he's not getting any milk because he usually has a little in his mouth when he pulls off.
@Bao: Elliot is also really gassy. Sigh lol. I guess with such an easy baby in all other aspects this is just that one thing that needs to be our difficulty.
@sloaneandpuffy: Yepp my LC said to not force him onto the breast when he's that upset and recommended pumping and feeding him that since at least he's getting breast milk that way. He's been taking a bottle at least once a week since he was about 3 weeks old with no issues before.

The only times this has happened to me have been because of gas or other GI issues. I am curious about giving him pumped milk... Did your LC say to do that? I might be worried about starting that habit and getting away from actual nursing.

I know my LO gets upset waiting for my letdown and I have to almost force her on for those few seconds until it happens because she is so impatient. I was going to say maybe thrush but you said a bottle is working out fine. My lo gets upset if she is gassy too.

Oh no so sorry to hear about this new issue! L does something similar where he'll unlatch himself, and sometimes he cries a well. My LC seemed to think it was gas related and she told me to burp before, during, and after each feeding/ before switching sides, and to cut out cows milk. It would seem strange that he cries because if fast let down? I could see choking and then crying but just crying seems strange. Is it possible that it's just a weir baby phase? Maye it will pass? Fingers crossed for you, friend! I hear ya on breatfeeding being te only stressor right now!

Has there been anything different going on the 2-3 times he did good on the breast in the last week? A certain time of day? Position? Room/atmosphere? Feeding schedule pushed back or forward/different?

@Running Elley: I had to start "power pumping" which is basically pumping for 5 mins (up to 10mins) many times a day...like 8x a day and nursing as much as possible (even if you just *start* him on the breast and finish him off with a bottle). Constantly stimulating the nipples plus drinking Milkmaid tea got me back to normal within a few days.
Also, my doctor told me that because LO has such severe reflux and spit-up, that I could thicken his milk with rice cereal. I was reluctant so, I decided only to do it to his last bottle before bed so that he wouldn't spit-up in his sleep. I did it and apparently, because the rice cereal is jam packed with calories, it allowed him to need less breast milk for that feed. So, that helped a ton. He only needs like 3oz for that last feed now, which is good because that's pretty much all I've got by PM.

I'm so sorry : ( Like you, I had hurdle after hurdle with BF (small baby, fast nurser, fast letdown, too much milk, baby with reflux, baby with dairy intolerance.....). Ultimately I ended up switching to pumping at 6 weeks because I couldn't deal with my son screaming at the breast. I can't say what the right answer is...for us, I think it was a combo of my letdown and his reflux, which made it uncomfortable to eat. Exclusively pumping is so, so taxing, however, so if you would like to continue BF I encourage you to keep trying. Have you tried pumping off a little before feeding him or hand expressing into a cloth to ease the letdown? I just couldn't because I was so worried about my son's size.

Definitely pump everytime you feed him to keep up your supply.

Have you ever tried a nipple shield? My baby had trouble latching and I have a super forceful letdown, so I started using a nipple shield. I will say I wish I didn't have to use it, but I've been breastfeeding for 3 months with it and its really made my life much easier and breastfeeding more enjoyable. No more latching trouble, no pain, and it calms my forceful letdown. It hasn't affected my supply at all.

Sounds like letdown to me. LO does the same thing to me occasionally. There is a link on Kellymom describing it and I remember reading it and it described my DS to a t. I can't find the exact link but this might help? http://kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/letdown/

I'm feeling your pain ladies, we're seven weeks in tomorrow and breastfeeding is still a frustrating experience for us too.

Have you checked your LO for thrush? I know that when my LO first got thrush in her mouth it caused her enough pain that she was reluctant to suck. I was thinking that maybe the sucking motion required for the bottle is different to the motion required for the breast?

My other thought was about what you're putting on your nipples, is there something that LO might not like the taste of perhaps? Hope you get it sorted soon!

@Running Elley: I didn't:( it died. So, I started nursing again...basically I alternate feedings (breast/bottle/breast..) so my nips can recover in between. It's not fun but it keeps y supply up because I seriously couldn't pump 7x a day! Such a hassle...
It works for us...that and lots of gel pads and lanolin:/ sigh. It's all worth it they say!

It seems like all that I ask about lately is nursing advice but that's been the biggest issue we've had and continued to have with our little guy :(

A little background: I've always had pain while breastfeeding and our latest issue (went to see another LC last Friday) is apparently vasospasms caused by Elliot clamping down really hard which the LC suspected is caused by a forceful letdown on my part.

Before last Friday Elliot was nursing well- I was just in a lot of pain. As of Friday night though we have a whole new problem. When it's time to eat and I try to put e to the breast he'll latch on and almost immediately come off screaming. He'll continue to scream if I try to relatch him. If I try to give him a bottle with pumped milk he takes it and sucks it down immediately.

Since he takes the bottle I don't think sucking is causing him pain. This only started last Friday so I don't think it's completely because of my letdown. If it was wouldn't it have manifested sooner?

I put him to the breast at every feeding. I try switching positions, I've tried pumping for a minute or two first to avoid the letdown issue, I burp him. I just don't know what's wrong and it seems like every feeding is a 45 minute screaming fest/fight that ends with me giving in and giving him pumped milk from a bottle. Since Friday we've had 2 or 3 really good feeding where he's stayed at the breast. I'm really stressed out and terrified of how this is affecting my supply :( Does anyone have any advice?
