Crying is stress relief, that's what I always told myself when my son was small.

My first did this intermittently, and my second "complains" while falling asleep often (not real screaming but fussing/whining). I always just considered it all fighting the nap. I feel like some babies just don't WANT to nap, and they protest. But eventually they give in lol.

@annem1990: My first did that. She cried before every nap until she was 18 months old (around the time she could communicate). It sucks. I’m still amazed that my second will fall asleep without crying. One thing to try, is putting your LO to bed awake and let him cry a bit there. I found around that age that my DD was finding me rocking her to be overstimulating. So when I put her in her bed, she actually cried less than when I was holding her. It was so weird.

When my daughter did that it was actually because we were trying to put her down to sleep too early - she needed longer wake times. I kept trying earlier and earlier since I thought she was overtired, but she was actually undertired!

@cnidaria: This is EXACTLY how I feel! Thank you for commenting. It really helps to know I'm not alone. I'm glad your LO eventually grew out of it. Fingers crossed!

You're not failing!! No advice, but lots of sympathy... my daughter would scream and cry before going to sleep every time until she was about 8 months old for anywhere from 15-90 minutes. Made no difference whatsoever whether we held her, rocked her, fed her, used a routine, etc. No particular reason for it, she just hated going to sleep. I remember thinking it was just so unfair because it would take 45 minutes of screaming to get her to sleep and then she would only sleep for 20-30 minutes. The good news is that she eventually did grow out of it on her own.

I had the same issue and turned out my ds had silent reflux. I didn’t even think to bring it up to the dr until some other hb’ers suggested it!

Maybe silent reflux?? DS had it and he was very hard to settle to sleep. He was just uncomfortable and would squirm, cry and scream. He didn't spit up much and was gaining weight just fine so I didn't think he had reflux.. I realized it when I noticed he was getting stuffy during the night and that it was a sign so I took him to dr and we got meds and he was better within days.

Please help. I feel like I'm going crazy...

DS is 3 months. For the past couple of weeks he SCREAMS before every sleeep in my arms. I try to begin the routine (swaddle, lullabies, rocking) as soon as he shows tired signs or before. Whenever I start it, he begins to scream anywhere from 5-30mins. He does take a pacifier and will take it but then spits it out every 30 seconds to scream again.

I've tried doing this at certain intrevals (maybe he's overtired)...but whether I do it 45mins or 90mins from his last sleep, he screams. I feel like I'm failing. He wakes up smiley and ready to play, but we have to start the whole routine over again shortly after and it's really taking a toll.
I just want him to be happy :crying:
Any advice??
