Well an update is in order. My sister sent out a lovely email to just very small group of close friends and family explaining that we are not having a shower, but just FYI if you would like to get the new parents some gifts below is their registry info.

My sister said she's been getting really positive responses. I'm very thankful my friends and family seem to be very appreciative rather than turned off by the email.

Thanks HB family for listening and commenting!

We are doing a meet the baby party for local friends. We had a very small shower with my husband's family a few weeks ago, it was nice, and I hate being the center of attention.

My cousin's wife had a distance baby shower that was really fun, we all mailed stuff to arrive on one weekend and called her and skyped- very cool idea for someone far away who also hates being the center of attention.

Ok, what about this: a virtual baby shower. It sounds a little out there and I'm not sure I would even do it myself but what about sending out invitations or even just e-vites and have a big group skype date or g-chat party or something along those lines? Perhaps someone could create a couple of virtual baby shower games or the e-vite could encourage people to dress for a theme (pj party, going out attire, fancy dress, gender colors if you know what you're having or have them dress in their guess (boy or girl) if you don't know what you're having, etc.) Everyone could offer advice or mention a favorite baby book or whatever. I think there's some potential here but you might think it's super chessy..just a suggestion.

@Clementine: I feel you. All my friends and family are back in the States so I'm feeling like I'm going to miss out on all the love that I know I'd get if we were there. My husband has some family here in the UK (but no one that close) and showers aren't really "done" here.
I've thought about a virtual shower, but I don't know... I think this is just one of those things that I'll miss out on. I think people will still get us gifts, but a shower is about so much more than "stuff"!

Set up a registry and if people ask then you can graciously let them know. Someone I know was in your position and sent us all an email stating that since she lives far away, she is unable to have a shower and was therefore having her own "online" shower for her unborn child and to please select a gift that we could purchase for them. It was a huge turn off.

I know someone that had a "skype shower". The woman was registered at a couple places and her husband went and picked up all the gifts, wrapped them and decorated the house for her. On the other side family and friends were gathered and had arranged for her husband to help her out with "baby bingo", and another game. She opened all the gifts on skype, and had her husband keep track of what came from who. It was really sweet. Maybe something like that could be done?

some people have already asked me if i have a registry. i say you set one up and when people ask, you can tell them where you're registered.

i too like the "welcome baby" party idea. then you wouldn't mind so much that people are coming out of their way to see you and the baby.

I didn't have a shower either but still got a lot of gifts. I set up a registry anyway because I knew there would be people who wouldn't know what to buy. So if they asked me if I had a registry, then I had a link for them.

I would make sure your registry is searchable on the sites where you are registered. If people want to give you a gift, they will give you a gift if you have a shower or not! My SIL had this same problem and she did not have a shower. She had tons of stuff sent to her once the baby was born as a congrats! gift.

I'm kind of in the same boat but at least I have my Mom and Dad here. My extended family is all across the East and Mid West and my friends are spread out. I have a few here but none that would throw a shower (I only have one friend with kids and the others don't plan on having kids or are jealous of pregnant friends). I think my Mom will throw a shower and we'll invite everyone far away and near and if people can come? GREAT! If not, that is fine, too.

Oh, forgot to mention. I went to a gender reveal party last month where they kept the baby's gender a surprise to everyone. They invited friends/family and revealed the surprise there.

Here's an example of one that I found online:
http://www.modernpartyideas.com/special-occasions/gender-reveal/gender-reveal-party-ideas/

It was seriously the most fun I had at a "baby shower".

I'm in the same boat! Both my family and DH's family are literally on the OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY! And, we just moved here in August, so I would never expect my new friends to throw me a shower or even get me/the baby any gifts.

I do like the idea of a meet the baby party! But who knows how long it'll be after the little guy is born that I'll feel up to hosting a party at my house...lol

How about a "welcome baby" party? I've been to quite a few parties where the parents would host a dinner at their house to help "welcome their baby". I thought it was a great idea and everyone had so much fun. And they registered too. It was a blast because everyone was allowed to bring their entire familes (husbands/wives/SO's/kids), unlike baby showers where it's typically just the ladies.

I don't plan on having a baby shower because all my close friends and family live far away from my current location. Although I do have some friends in my new city, we aren't that close that I would expect any of them to throw me a shower. I would like to celebrate my baby, but not sure what else I can do.

I also think it's silly to send an email with our registry info when we're not throwing a party. Any suggestions or ideas.
