@runsyellowlites: we had a friend in a similar situation- he and the mom are raising her together but he wanted to get his plae set up for baby even though she will be staying at moms in the beginning. We went with practical- diapers, wipes, and a target gift card. We didn't know what he wanted at home vs what he'd share with the mom but figured he can always find what he needs at target. We didn't have a Lo yet though at the time.

I have to say good for him getting ready to take on as much responsibility as he can I'm guessing its a tough situation right now.

Thanks everyone! My sister (who doesn't have kids) kinda freaked about a higher dollar single item (the ergo) so I told her she couldn't go wrong with diapers & a list of smaller must need items.... like the bottle drying rack, white noise machine, etc.

From what I gathered the mom is involved, but he's looked to be an involved, on board dad too so he's getting his own house ready!

My DH loves the baby bjorn the most. I'd give diapers, wipes, sleepers that zip and a Dad-specific book

Diaper genie. My husband hates the smell of poo!

Also what about laundry detergent, stain remover, baby books, other stuff like that which a dad may not know about.

Diapers and wipes! You can never ever have too many. Other basic necessities he may not think about.

White noise machine, Dr Browns formula pitcher, NoseFrida, Ergo, Miracle Blanket/Swaddleme/etc... those random SUPER useful things thats a Mom would think about but a Dad wouldn't maybe know as much about.

This is an interesting question bc I do think some dads prefer different gear. For instance, while I like the Ergo, DH likes our Deuter frame backpack carrier.

My other suggestions:
- bottle feeding supplies, like http://tinyurl.com/oucnzuv (you can pre-measure formula into different compartments, has a spout so you can pour it out later w/o making a mess) or a bottle drying rack
- a souped-up diaper changing pad like http://tinyurl.com/q4fxhhp (DH prefers shoving this + everything else he needs into a backpack, I like diaper bags w/lots of pockets to stay organized)
- diapers, diapers, and more diapers

DH is pretty comfortable carrying E around in the Ergo with an infant insert. Kudos to whoever this is for taking that kind of responsibility. Maybe he should sign up for HB for MOTN advice. ;)

My sister just texted me that a friend of her SO's is getting ready to be a single dad & is having a baby shower. She asked me to ask DH what her bf should get his friend & DH said "a wife", but really he doesn't know what would really be needed as primary care giver (he's wonderf but puhlease).

We both thought something for middle of the night wakings would be good but since I bf'd & my solution (still) is just to give P the boob I really don't know what would be good.

I also though some kind of baby carrier would be nice so he can wear baby during those wakings or while taking care of stuff around the house but what would be a good recommendation that's still reasonably priced?

I know you ladies will have some great ideas so I thought I'd turn to the hive! TIA
