Thanks for the advice everyone! I had no idea about J&J. I talked to my husband and we decided to go organic. I also had no clue about baby powder (although I've never seen anyone use baby powder in real life anyway!).

I'm gonna try to return the Rite Aid toiletries and donate the dollar store stuff. As for the off brand Boppy, I looked it up on Amazon and it had great reviews. So, I'm gonna give it a try.

As always, I appreciate everyone's feedback!

You don't sound horrible to me! I didn't keep anything I didn't want. Babies R Us actually took back a lot of things with no receipt, I guess as long as they carry the items. I just piled everything up and got store credits and the stuff I couldn't return I brought to my obgyn's office because they always have a bin to collect baby items for donation. I didn't want J&J toiletries because I prefer the natural stuff and I didn't want tons of diapers because we use mostly cloth. I just didn't want to clog up the house with stuff we didn't need or want. The only thing you might consider is keeping both breastfeeding pillows. As long as the other one feels comfortable to you, it's nice to have a spare for when you have to wash one.

I use my son's baby lotion for myself, and when we travel, I just bring baby stuff and we all use that so we don't have to pack 3 different kinds of things, so if you're planning a trip, I'd save at least one of each item.

If the powder is cornstarch, you can use that, it shouldn't be used if it is made from talc, that's my understanding.

Loads of off-brand and store brand diapers are really good! We use Pampers normally, but we've used Walgreens, WalMart and Target brand as well and they work just fine.

Go ahead and return or donate what you really don't want - don't feel bad about it!!

As for what I'd do, personally - I'd keep the stuff as back up. I'm always running out of my shampoo/dog shampoo/face wipes - I bet I'd get through the "back up" stuff pretty quickly!! I also agree with pps about the wipes - you always need wipes around the house for a variety of things - cleaning down the changing pad etc.

For the record, when it comes to nappies, we fully intend to try out a range of different cheaper brands. We have been gifted some Pampers but if the cheaper brands don't leak or cause nappy rash I will be downgrading permanently. We have also bought some supermarket own-brand wipes to try - they're for wiping up poop, as long as they don't cause a rash I don't care what brand they are!

That said - it's completely up to you and if you'd prefer to use branded stuff that's your prerogative and there's nothing wrong with that.

@rahlyrah: None of it sounds like huge purchases anyway so I'd just keep most of it.

For the rite aid stuff, here's from their return policy:

With a valid ID, items returned WITHOUT a receipt may be exchanged or refunded, for a Rite Aid Merchandise Return Card, for the lowest retail price for which that item sold in past 30 days, or a product exchange will be offered.

https://www.riteaid.com/customer-support/return-policy

I returned Luvs diapers to target because they were size 2 and by then we were set on pampers swaddlers.

Maybe you could also return the toiletry stuff you don't want. Powder is useless, or at least the nurse in my infant care class gave a good argument for it being useless.

Or donate it. I just kept some of it for emergencies. That's what we did with the J&J stuff. I think I read they will be doing away with their harmful chemicals but I don't know when and we have grown to love Burt's Bees even though it's so expensive!

It doesn't sound bad at all. Which pillow do you like best? If it's the boppy then research where the other one came from, like a pp said Babies R Us will give you credit for non-registry without a receipt. I would also suggest rethinking J&J, we use Yes to baby carrots because of allergies. Off brand diapers are always worth trying, as with wipes.

I would return the diapers and wipes for swaddlers...that's what we did with all non swaddlers diapers we got at my shower.

I would reconsider, J&J products and go with a different brand...we use California baby.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-57493890-10391704/johnson-johnson-to-phase-out-potentially-harmful-chemicals-by-2015/

I wouldn't use baby powder either, it can cause asthma.

I would keep the "boppy" that you cannot return....I don't see much of a difference.

Don't feel bad about wanting "brand name" just don't stock up too much, baby may be allergic or the product may not work ou for your baby.

Don't feel bad about returning anything. Return what you aren't going to use. OR you can find a women's shelter and donate those items. Then they would go to good use for someone else that really needs them.

I would keep the items, re-gift them, or donate them. You could always call and see if you could get store credit. You may find the diapers will work good enough to get the money's worth out of them. If they aren't the best you could always use them when you know you will be home. Off brand wipes can be used for tons of things besides wiping bottoms. You could use them for LO's face/hands after meals when they get older (we do this), use them for wiping down surfaces, or keeping extra in vehicles. Also you could keep them at grandparents' or other family/friends houses you frequent a lot. If your LO will be going to daycare you could bring them there, or even donate them to a local daycare. I'm sure you could find many uses for these items :)

We just switched from pampers swaddlers to walmart brand this week (shes six weeks tomorrow) and not only are working great they are three dollars cheaper and you get ten more per pack. We were also gifted a box of 900 Costco brand sensitive wipes and they have also worked great. So, in my opinion, there would be no reason to not use those.

We got a lot of Johnson's for our shower and my son ending up being sensitive to it- he always broke out in a rash. Two years later we are still using it to wash our dog! Hehe... But we used Johnson's to wash her before he was born so now we just are stocked up :). As for the off brand diapers I'd make sure they work as well at home before using them in diaper bag... Last place you want a blowout is when you're out and about. Wipes I'd use, or keep in the cars to clean up messes- kids are always spilling something and even if you don't want to use it on the baby's tush you can use them for other messes. Anything left, I'd prob donate!

We only used shampoos that got good ratings by the cosmetic database, so we wouldn't use J & J, Aveeno or off label brands. We usually ended up with Burt's Bees, California Baby or Bubble and Bee products.

Do you know where the off brand pillow is from? Babies R Us let us return some stuff without a receipt that wasn't on our registry. I'd keep the more comfortable pillow. I'd also donate or try to return the washes and lotions. I am also particular about what brands I want to use with the baby.

: @hilsy85: totally agree

I'd keep the diapers and wipes. Diapers might be good! Lots of off brands are good. Wipes are oftentimes errrr if not the same as name brand!
The boppy? Ok to be honest, I use it more as a butt pillow after I got stitches:) than I did for nursing! I'd return and keep the one you can't return.
The soaps and stuff....if they have the same active ingredients as J&J then I'd use them. So compare... Or you could try to return and get store credit. I use some baby shampoo to wash my makeup brushes!!

I would keep the diapers and wipes...I would try out a few when LO gets here and if they work (i.e. the fit is right and LO isn't having blowouts/leaks), I would use those diapers as the ones I throw in teh diaper bag when we travel. You can never have too many diapers/wipes!

As for the boppy, they do all work the same as far as I can tell. So I would keep the off brand one and return the one you bought!

We had our baby shower today and it was absolutely amazing! We got a lot of the gear we needed and it was great spending time with friends and family.

The only problem is that most of my family went off registry. In most cases, it is fine, but there are several items that I'm not sure what to do with (no receipts). Being a first time mom, I am turning to you ladies for help.

-Rite Aid brand diapers. We got several packs of these. I planned on using Pampers Swaddlers though. Should I still keep these? Is it bad to use different diaper brands on him?

-Rite Aid brand wipes. Same issue as above.

-Rite Aid, Dollar Store, and other off brand baby shampoo, powder, lotion. We planned on using Johnson & Johnson.

-An off brand Boppy. We also got a real Boppy. However, we have a receipt for the real Boppy and not the off brand. Do all nursing pillows pretty much work the same?

I hate sounding shallow and wanting all name brand. I could be totally wrong and they could all be perfectly fine. I've just never done this before and don't know what to do with it all. I hate that people wasted their money if we don't use it!
