Delay during any illness, but not because of autism. Mine usually don't feel good the day they get vaccinations, so wouldn't want them feeling extra icky if they already didn't feel well.

I know linking autism to sick kids getting vaccinated is/was irrational. Thankfully, he doesn't appear to be sick- no fever and no projectile vomit that doesn't resemble milk. The ped said his behavior changes were harmless and now he's eating again like his old self anyway. The ped told me to delay vax only if there is a fever, which is the same advice many of you all said.

@winniebee: Same! DD always gets a little fever and is cranky/ sick for a couple days after getting vaccines so I would probably try to reschedule the appointment just so I didn't make her feel worse.

Our ped won't do it if there's a fever.
I would just follow the ped's lead and ask when I'm in today for the sick visit.
It won't hurt anyone to delay the well visit and shots by a week if it will make you feel better.

Our doc doesn't vaccinate if baby is sick. I defer to the
Peds judgement. We hAve had vaccines for my 2 year old at the tail end of a cold, but I wouldn't if her behavior was telling me she was not well or if she had a fever. Oh and autism wouldn't be the reason why we waited.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: for what is worth, LO2 has reflux so we deal with puke on the regular. Our ped has always said spit up that still looks like milk is likely the result of over feeding or trapped air and anything curdled is reflux.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: my LO spit up like that was either when she coughed a little, or similar to you, when I changed positions- like she would cough a bit so I would hold her up to my shoulder and she would projectile spit up all over both of us. If it was a while after eating it smelled like curdled milk. Certainly worth checking with your proof course, but it sounds very similar. Lots of outfit changes for us both. Dh came out one morning and I had just stopped bothering to put on pants because I didn't feel like adding to the laundry.

We just had A in for her 4m well visit. We were also having her checked out for a lingering cough. She had no fever, but was diagnosed with sinus infection. I asked about waiting for the vaccines and the ped said since she didn't have a fever, she was comfortable giving the vaccines but ultimately let us choose. We went ahead and got the vaccines. I am firmly confident that there is zero correlation between vaccines (when healthy or sick) and autism.

@Foodnerd81: thank you for sharing what a sick child's spit up is like. My LO spit up cloudy, seemingly undigested breast milk within 7-10 minutes of eating. Then white clumpy milk a half hour later and more concerning once again two hours later. I told the nurse his spit up seems to be triggered by transfers. The last one was when I carried him upstairs.

I agree with no vaccines if there is a fever. If you still feel like he's sick, then delay a bit.

I'm sure the doctor can give you some guidance. But also remember sometimes kids get over stuff much faster than adults. So a fever today/friday could be completely gone by Sunday/Monday.

What @winniebee: said- I would wait a week just to make sure he's feeling good before vaccinating, since that can make them feel a little crummy. Plus if he got a fever I would want to know if it was a reaction to the vaccine or because he was sick. FWIW we just had our 6 month visit and while the baby is healthy, my toddler and I are both sick, and my pediatrician asked if I wanted to wait until everyone was better just in case she was fussy since I needed the break. (I did it anyway since she was healthy and we've been to the ped office 6 times in three weeks and I didn't want to go back!). All this has nothing to do with autism.

Also when my baby has a little cold and is stuffy she tends to have big huge spit ups. The mucus in her throat makes her gag and everything comes up. It's super gross and annoying but has nothing to do with true vomiting from a stomach bug or anything.

As a general rule of thin our ped doesn't vaccinate sick kids. We would have to reschedule. We prefer not to vaccinate sick children either.

Zero correlation to autism for me. I don't believe that!

I know some doctors won't give vaccines to babies (or adults) if they are exhibiting any signs of illness. As far as I know, it's not because the vaccine will do anything bad because they're sick. More so because if they already have a fever or other symptoms, it would be hard to distinguish whether they were having a reaction to the vaccine after or if it was just part of their existing illness.

Your pediatrician will be able to tell you if you should delay or not. Usually if they have a fever, they'll suggest delaying, because many vaccines cause a fever themselves. But if it's just a common cold, they'll often leave it up to you to decide.

I always just go ahead and vaccine even if my kid is sick because it's required for daycare and I don't want to have to make a second trip. Especially once they are already IN daycare, they are sick constantly anyway, so if I delayed for a cold, they'd never get vaccinated!

I truly appreciaye the input! Hopefully, he isn't sick. I just fed him now and realizing it's been 3 hours since he last ate. Usually LO is fussing to eat, but he happily nursed when offered. Maybe he is a little sick after all.

I'm still on mat leave @coopsmama: and can run him to the doctor's office whenever for right now at least.

I personally would not vaccinate while a child is sick - especially if the child is running a fever. Personally I think it's best for their immune system to be functioning as well as possible before receiving the vaccine although I know some say it doesn't make a difference. If you have the time to run in for separate appointments, to me it would be worth it.

FWIW, I went in for my 32 week appt last week and had shingles. My nurse asked if I wanted the tDap at that appointment and then corrected herself and said, "oh wait, you're sick. Probably best not to get it this time anyway. We can do that at the next appointment."

But really, you need to do what you're comfortable with as the parent. :)

If my kids have a common cold, I bring them in for their scheduled vaccines. If they have fever or are more sick than that, I wait. At 2m, I'd wait until he were symptom free.

None of this is b/c of autism though....I just know vaccines can make them feel crummy and I don't want them to feel more crummy on top of already feeling crummy.

I know vaccines do not cause autism; however, I cannot shake the annecdotes of parents who say their kids were under the weather during immunizations and then were later diagnosed with autism.

Tuesday I had a sore throat, Wednesday a runny nose. Today (Thurs) throat is better, nose still runs. I called the insurance nurses' hotline because baby is sneezing more and threw up three times since eating BM this morning. The nurse advised to feed him less in one sitting (sounds like she's addressing reflux) and to get him to his doctor within 3-4 hours.

His appointment is set this afternoon for a sick visit. His well visit is Monday and he is supposed to receive his first vaccines (2 mos). Let's say he is diagnosed as being sick I wonder if I should delay the vaccines. Have you had to make a similar decision?
