I started at 12 months, when my daughter really started to use a lot of words. She does more, nurse, and drink, now. I'm not really interested in teaching her nouns - mostly just verbs for things she needs. And I'm finding that she picks up the spoken word for a thing along with it. But still, baby sign is amazing. I really love seeing her do it.

I am so interested in signing with LO, I used to teach in a school that was regional for deaf/HI. What is the earliest you've tried signing to your LO?

We will be signing with our baby within the first minutes of life & will raise him in a bilingual house because I am an interpreter and my husband is Deaf. It's never too early to start exposure to language, good luck!!

Our LO started really learning sign language at a year. She's almost 14 months now and she knows:

more
eat
please
thank you
hat
all done
bye
sleep

Her daycare introduces at least a sign a week (4/month). We've also been working on hot, no, and no biting.

I guess I will give an update.

LO is now 14 months and can do lots of signs!
- More
- Please
- Milk
- Eat
- Drink
- Bird
- Sometimes frog
- Momma
- Dadda
- made up sign for dog
- fish lips for fish
- baby
And then obviously she can wave bye bye and blow kisses!

@redsmarties: really great idea!!!

bumping this thread as I'm really interested - DS is 7.5 months and just signed "more" during meal time which was his first word. I'm surprised because we've signed "milk" a lot more but for some reason he picked up more quickly.

@redsmarties: Such great advice! Signing was so successful with our DD, that we've started doing it with our DS (5 months), as well. I'm so excited for him to start signing back!

Let's see, DD signed for the first time at 9 months; she did the sign for snow. After that, she gradually started adding in more signs, especially signs for animals and other nouns. I don't think she really did two or more signs togather until she was over a year, though. Most of the time she would either point at something she wanted and sign please, more, etc...., or she would ask please and then I'd ask her what exactly she wanted.

There isn't really a 'right' or 'wrong' stage for little ones to be at when it comes to sign language (if its being used as an additional language).

To increase vocabulary, I strongly recommend signing everything that you can. Every time you give her juice, sign juice, every time she picks up a ball, sign ball (while saying the word)

That being said, if you want your LO to be able to string two or more signs together, I suggest giving her options. For example, if you are giving her berries for snack, wait until she signs 'more'. Then ask 'more berries?" or 'more water?'. After several repetitions of this, she should begin to respond with either berries or water (as an example). Even if she signs 'water', but you know she wants 'berries', still give her the water.

Don't be discouraged if she doesn't seem to grasp stringing signs together. That is a linguistic skill not often mastered by speaking or signing children until around 18mos - 2 years.

Let me know if you have any more questions - I'm trained as an infant sign instructor!

We are trying to teach our LO baby sign language. We just want her to pick up a few of the key words so that she can communicate with us.

We started signing and saying the words to her around 6 months and by 10 months she was able to do a few words back to us (starting with Milk).

Now at 12 months, I feel like maybe she should know more "words". She says more and please a lot but doesn't attach objects to those requests so we never know what she wants. She points well so sometimes that would help. It would be nice if she could say "More Water" or "More Books" instead of getting frustrated with us when she signs more and we don't understand. Where should she be say by 14 or 18 months?

10 months - Milk, Bye Bye, and blows kisses (not really sign language but you know).
11 months - More and Please
12 months - All Done
