We started at 6 months with 'milk' and she definitely understands it but hasn't used it back yet at 7 months. We now sign 'all done' after solids which always makes her laugh for some reason!

We started around 6 months, I tried to use more, all done, and water. I think around 11 months he started signing more, but only if I did it first. I THINK he may be starting to do all done now, at 12.5 months?@sarac: I totally agree with that, I was frustrated because I had been doing it for 5 months with zero payback--it would have been better to just start later.

She's learned dog and just turned 6 months. They teach it during story time at the library and I try to remember to do whatever we learn at home. Now that I've realized she's picked up on something I am going to focus on milk, food, more and all done.

Daycare started teaching LO around 4 months. He started signing with us consistently around 11 months. He now signs and says the word at the same time.

Day care is teaching her. So far I know they have taught her the basic: milk, more, eat. Not sure what all the other ones are. I don't think that she really gets it yet though.

I started when my daughter got her first word at 11 months. We did 'milk' and 'more' at first, and eventually added 'all done' 'food' and 'drink'. I would say the word and do the sign. She'd watch for a week or so, then start doing the sign. A few weeks after that, it became clear that she was using them as actual language. I'd personally recommend waiting to start until your child is clearly saying words or getting close - to avoid feeling like you've been working on it for months with no results.

She learned 'drink' at 12 months in the middle of a hot summer - and she started signing it all the time. I felt awful that she wanted more water than I'd been giving her! Baby sign was enormously useful for us, I was heartbroken when she gave it up. It required almost no effort on my part - I just made the sign when I said the word. It was awesome.

We started at 8 months, but only got serious at 9 months. We're doing: milk, eat, more, all done, mommy, daddy. I think she only gets 'milk', and I thiiiiink I've seen her do it a couple times. She's 9.5 months.

Started as early as possible (when he wasn't in our arms) and we did "more", "all done" mostly. Then we added "milk" for nursing, "thank you", and "sorry"

I started with "all done", "eat", and "more" around 6 months when we started solid foods. At about 10-11 months she started doing "all done" and uses it consistently at meal times (and other times when she is finished!). "More" was a harder concept so we focused on "eat" and she understands it but doesn't use it as much. Concepts like "thank you" and "please" are also harder to understand so we're waiting on those. Now we're introducing "ball", "more" (again), "no", "diaper", "drink" (for drinks in a cup), and "milk" (for nursing only - should have done that one a long time ago!).
At nearly a year old, I think she's picking them up pretty well - but not using them yet.

@MamaMoose: aww cute with the blowing kisses. I just read that that counts as sign language by the way! :) And I also read that you should focus on the things LO is most interested in, so food related signing is always a big hit!

We started really repeating a few signs around 6 months. He is 7 months now and definitely responds to "milk." I think he is close to understanding "more" and "all done."

School started teaching my LO around 9 months. She's now 11 months and she can sign "more" "eat" and "all done". She very food focused!! I'm trying to teach her "thank you" now. But when I try to sign it and get her to mimic me she just blows kisses because the motions are similar.

Has anyone used baby sign language?

If you did,
- when did you start?
- what were the first signs you used?

Thanks! :)
