I would try to make as easy as possible and leave an empty bottle and ready to use milk.

I would try to leave an extra bottle of not previously frozen milk if possible, and if not just leave instructions so she only thawed a second bag if necessary.

I EP and my dd (10 weeks) takes anywhere between 4oz and 6oz ...at night she starts to stock up and eats much more frequently. Id leave extra just to be safe...nothing worse than a crying hungry baby and no food to feed her. I don't think she would be weirded out in having to deal with breastmilk...especially if she BFed her own children!

@danda: I'm planning to actually feed the baby as literally the last thing I do before walking out the door, so I don't know that I'd get even an ounce right then. She usually eats every 3-4 hours so I shouldn't be too uncomfortable at 4.5.

@MamaCate: Yeah, I could probably try to skim a bit in the next couple days, but she's been super hungry lately, so I don't want to be taking milk that she might need. My pumping is seriously like .5 oz from both boobs pathetic at the best of times. Possibly because I didn't invest in a good pump since I need to do it so infrequently.

Definitely don't thaw an extra bag!! C is almost 4 months and usually takes 3-4 oz at one sitting so I think 5 is going to be plenty, and on the off chance that it's not, thawing is not a big deal, especially if she breast fed her own kids.

I'd find out how much she drinks and maybe freeze some smaller quantities for the future. Sometimes I just want to give a snack to tide her over to a full feeding so I have bags from 2 to 4 ounces in the freezer. I hate pumping so I'd rather waste the plastic bags than milk.

i would leave instructions. i'm betting your aunt is fine with it and i'd rather have more than less. at that age, LO was unpredictable. do you have a smaller than 5 oz bag? i think DD was only eating 4ish ounces at that point.

5 ounces is plenty! But please let your aunt know...since it is easy to drink from bottle as compared with breast, often the baby doesn't get the same "I'm full" signal right away and will still act hungry. Baby should NOT be hungry anytime soon after 5 ounces. I'd still leave instructions for thawing just for my own piece of mind though.

Or- can you pump before you leave to make up for the missed feeding in advance, so you don't get uncomfortable?

Could you leave some freshly pumped milk in the fridge? That way she would have it if she needs it, and if not, you could put it in the freezer after you get back if it isn't needed. I think fridge milk that just needs to be warmed would be less hassle.. But I don't know if you are planning to pump between now and the movie.

I would just leave instructions. When my LO was younger I always thawed way too much milk and it went to waste. It's not too hard to thaw more if she needs it. Have fun!

Our almost four month old is being baby sat by my aunt (for free) while we go see Hunger Games this weekend. I expect to be gone from 5:45-10:15. My plan is to feed her right before I leave, leave a 5oz bottle for her because she'll probably want to eat around 7:30-8pm at her usual bedtime, and then give her usual dream feed around 11pm.

However, I don't typically feed her pumped milk, so I'm kind of ball parking what I assume she'll eat. I freeze milk in 5oz bags because that seems like a reasonable large meal.

So, my question is if she's extra hungry, or we're delayed for some reason, do you think I should defrost and bottle an extra bag of milk? Or if you were baby sitting would you be comfortable handling somebody else's frozen breast milk if you were left instructions? I just don't want to leave unreasonable tasks with someone who's doing me a favour, but also don't want to waste an extra bag of milk if I don't have to since I can only get an extra ounce that she doesn't eat at a time so those 5oz bags are hard earned.

I realize I could probably just ask her if she's ok with it, but in case I'm totally coming from left field and nobody in the world is freaked out by breast milk, I'd rather the internet look at me like a crazy person than my aunt. LOL. And FWIW, she breast fed two of her own kids.
