In our case it was a waste of time because I can teach him to swim and we wanted the interaction. But it was here's the baby pool play and let's get in the big pool. No instruction for us or direction. This summer we are going to do semi private lessons for at least 2 weeks and hopefully he can get into level 1. It's not an actual class... just supervised time in the pool with a lifeguard present. DD loved it in the fall, but we only made it a few times b/c of sicknesses and my work travel. It's always astonishing to me when I find out adults can't swim or are really uncomfortable in the water.</p> <p>I used to volunteer-teach toddler swim classes and for the most part, especially at a young age, it is just about building their confidence in the water, making them comfortable in the water, and teaching them that it is fun! I think the younger you start the better! Most cities have a rec center that offers classes really cheap, and I know a lot of people who learned at the YMCA. You can call and find out if there's a different composition for the baby pool. It's also much warmer.</p> <p>We did swim lessons when she turned 6 months old, and it was great!
