We haven't done swim classes with LO but my aunt has an indoor pool that we've frequented since she was 3 months old. She loves the water! She even is content when we dunk her. I would definitely reccomend it. I think the exposure at a young age really helps. We also take her to gym classes (since she was 4.5 months old...she's now almost 6 months). She can already hang off of the bars. I love the exposure.

Do the chemicals in the pool not have any effect on newborns? I wasnt aware that babies under 6 months could go swimming. Or the water doesnt actually come in contact with their skin?

We started lessons around 1 year, I missed the registration for the earlier session. My son doesn't love it and it falls right during his morning nap, so there have been times where we've left early, but he does like the water more and more.

We've switched to another pool/time for round 2, I am looking forward to it.

@Pipers Mommy: it is going to be so much fun! I can just imagine how much fun it is with an older baby too!

My son loves the shower and bath too, so the pool was no problem. Swim season is year round here since it is so warm, but ours is an indoor pool anyway so we don't have to worry about sunburn.

@regberadaisy: They start babies as young as 4 weeks here in swim lessons! Check out the link above, it gives some good tips on how to introduce your baby to water in the tub/shower first to get you more comfortable.

I was a little worried since I am not a very strong swimmer, but they just have us in a 4 ft pool walking around with the babies.

@lemondrop:
What was the youngest there?
We have a in ground pool at our new house and I've been wondering what would be a good age to introduce the water to her. She's due 4/30 and I was hoping to get her some pool time before summer ends!
My husband would do it because he's a really good swimmer!

We start our lessons at the end of May, almost 10 months. I considered earlier but with it being winter here I thought it would be better to start closer to the actual swim season. She loves splashing in the tub so I am thinking this is going to be money well spent :)

@chopsuey119: @StbHisMrs: I wish I had gotten swim lessons at an early age, I had lessons for a few weeks when I was 7 then stopped, so I have never been a very strong swimmer.

Plus being in Phoenix, we have pools and canals everywhere, so I'd feel better if he was a good swimmer. Plus these lessons are so much fun- good bonding with the baby!

@Boogs:

Wow, I didn't know how lucky we are to have one that lets us do it so early! They are about 80/month here for weekly half hour sessions at 6 mos, it is doable for us, but pricey. I guess we'll see how it goes, our city also offers swim lessons for babies and toddlers for a lot less money.

I'm going to have to look into lessons in our area. My Mom had me in them at a very young age too, I need to get my 10 year old back in them too! In Oregon there isn't a real "swim" season!!!

I'm in Florida so I really want to get lo in the water. Everyone has pools so if she could swim that's one less thing to worry about. But she hated bath time at first so we waited, and now we have too much going on. Soon ill just take her into my mom's pool myself.

I wanted to do this with our baby but the place that does infant swim lessons here, doesn't start until the baby is 6 months old :-( Since we live in TX and it's warm almost year round, I would prefer for her to start learning about the water from a much younger age.

We just had our second swim lesson with our 9 week old this weekend, and it was so much fun! Just a suggestion to check out for other parents since I never would have thought of on my own! (thanks for making me think of this post @chopsuey119 :)

There is a local swim school that offers free swimming lessons for babies 4 weeks to 6 months. A friend started going with her son, and thought it would be fun for us to go together. Any activity to get me to get dressed and out the door these days is a good thing.

It isn't anything hardcore, we really just float the babies in the water with different exercises, but I can see the building blocks for bigger skills later on, and it is nice to meet other parents- even if you do have to put on a swimsuit postpartum (eek!).

I was watching little girl just over a year old before our lesson, and she was so comfortable in the water, and was even diving under!
