We just went through our first cold. We had to suction/Nose Frida him every 2-3 hours while running a humidifier 24/7 in order to get him to eat. Really irrigate the nose well with lots of saline before sucking - we went through 2 bottles of Little Remedies saline spray in no time flat. Also move the Nose Frida nozzle in small circles around the nostril while you are sucking - it seems to get more goop out.

We're 2 weeks post-cold and still suctioning him 2-3 times a day - that mucus is insistent. We also slept him in the rock n' play to keep him at an incline to help drain the mucus and keep his passages clear.

@littleblessings: @MusicaV: @avivoca: @Foodnerd81: i ended up squirting a little breast milk in her nose and sucking it out and that did seem to help. her cough is still bad.

she refused the bottle yesterday and seems to be nursing better today so hopefully she will continue to improve!

Oh and keep giving her the breast. The saliva get absorbed by the breast and signals your body to make more antibodies perfect for helping to get over an illness. :)

Keep her nose as clear as possible. I had to use wipe, bulb syringe and saline when my daughter had rsv. Good luck!

Pump or express some milk and put it up her nose. It clears up congestion very quickly. If you want to give her a bottle, I would use fresh milk. Fresh milk has the most antibodies that you can give her to help get better. Obviously, if you can nurse her instead of giving a bottle it would save time and dishes.

Awww, poor baby!! I would do what Little Misters Mom suggested with the steamy shower. It really does help to clear them out. Also, boogie wipes to clear crusties and the nosefrida to suck out the goopies. I'm so sorry she is so sick. I hope she bounces back quickly!

I second using the Nose Frida to get the congestion. Do you have a humidifier for her room? That really helps H when she has a cold, and when she was young we were able to raise her mattress to help everything drain properly.

@jmarionsmith: aw poor baby! I agree with the suggestion of steam then nose Frida then nursing while she's cleared out. Also use saline drops or must often throughout the day.

@Little Misters Mom: Thank you! I will definitely give the steam shower a try!

Yeah, I'm super paranoid about the foremilk/hindmilk thing but that makes sense that it wouldn't be a problem unless it persists! So good to know.

It's killing me seeing her like this and I just want to make everything as easy/comfortable for her. :(

You can try running a hot shower with the bathroom door closed to get it steamy and then nursing her in there after a few minutes. The Nose Frieda with saline drops to clear congestion. Nursing her/ giving the bottle in the most upright position you can manage. Basically, I'd just try to clear the congestion and then nurse immediately afterwards while she can still breath well. Poor little thing, hope this passes quickly.

If you're feeding her thawed milk, don't forget to pump too. The last thing you need is clogged ducts on top of sick kiddos!

ETA: I was very worried about occasional green poop caused by the hindmilk/foremilk imbalance. Our doctor said it's just not that big of a deal, unless it persists for weeks and there are other issues (weight gain, discomfort). So don't stress out too much about that.

DD is 9 weeks old and has caught her older brother's nasty virus. :( Her nose is so congested and she has such a horrible cough that she will only nurse for a few minutes then just give up and go to sleep.

I noticed today that her poop was green so I'm guessing that since she's not nursing long she's not getting enough hindmilk, also I'm just worried that she's not getting enough to eat in general.

I've already thawed some pumped milk thinking that drinking from the bottle will be faster and she can get some full feedings. Is this a good plan? Any other suggestions?
