I bought the Honest Company's Breathe Easy rub and put it on LOs feet. I think he was about 4 months old when I did it... It really seemed to help loosen things up a little bit for him and it had no methol, parabens, etc.

When LO was that small, we got a warm mist humidifier with Vicks Vapopads. We also would put a bit of Johnson's Vapor Bath in his bath each night. The warm mist humidifier always calms his cough, even now that he's over 2.

@ballerinabee: interesting. Thanks for sharing! We use Maty's on our LOs. My pediatrician is OK with the use and we trust our pediatrician so we use it. :) also, I think think that is why it's never recommended to be used on their chest. But on the bottom of their soles. Obviously I'm not a doctor or scientist though!

OP I just saw on the matys site that it's only recommend for 3m and older.

Sorry you are dealing with this!

We have dealt with congestion on and off for months, here's what we do:
Put him in the bouncer in the bathroom while we take hot showers
Humidifier
Saline drops and then nosefrieda a few minutes later
Oogie Bear (it's a snot scooper of sorts) for dryer boogers
Boppy under the mattress to create an incline
We've used honest company breathe easy rub on his feet, not sure it helps but it doesn't seem to hurt.

I've never actually put baby rub directly on DS. I have only rubbed a little on the outside of his jammies. That way its never touching his skin... just a thought.

But def ask your ped. I agree with the steam and humidifier too.

@ballerinabee: I think that's an important point-- it's not even designed to be cold treatment, just a soothing treatment. Thanks for finding that article.

Essential oils are used by a lot of integrative medicine practitioners and in our hospital we take them very seriously. I personally don't feel comfortable using them on infant skin because of the thin skin and their surface area is so small... so a little oil goes a long way.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Here's an article from Scientific American that addresses Vicks regular & Babyrub: http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post/after-vaporub-warning-what-about-ba-2009-01-14/?id=after-vaporub-warning-what-about-ba-2009-01-14

In a brief search, I'm not finding readily available research on essential oils (in this case, Oil of Oregano), but here is some info from a medical doctor (though she does seem to push Doterra; I bought my oil of oregano at Whole Foods, I believe):
http://www.drramsey.com/treating-infections-naturally-2/

She said their feet absorb a lot (true for all of us, actually), so it can be overwhelming for them. For infants she preferred the single oil rather than the blend of eucalyptus, lavender and rosemary oils, plus the fragrance. It's a lot.

She also said she's had parents forget to buy the baby vick's or assume that regular will be fine, and it definitely isn't good for babies, so she prefers not to recommend it the baby version to be safe.

C was almost 10 months (8.5 adjusted) when he got the flu, and was 1 year (10.5 mos adjusted) when he got pneumonia.

Our pediatrician said no to the baby vicks, but to rub oregano oil on baby's feet and then put socks on. That helped. We called them C's "pizza feet" because he smelled delicious!

Steaming in the bathroom, humidifier running always (make sure you keep an eye on the filter / cleanliness of the parts to make sure you're not spraying mold with the steam) should help too.

We also loved nose frida, and the rock & play sleeper because it kept C on an incline.

Steaming shower to break up the mucous. Put their mattress on a incline to reduce post nasal drip. Nose frida. Few drops of eucalyptus oil in the cool mist humidifier.

I think baby vicks on feet is OK at that age but if it were me I would double check with my ped. Because they're still so short the feet is far enough away they can't accidentally swipe it and eat it. But still close enough they still breathe it in.

I've done it. Not really sure if it helped but it didn't hurt. I used the baby Vicks.

Other than that, we use saline and nose frida and a humidifier at night.

That's interesting, I never understood what putting vicks on feet was supposed to do, I thought the point of it was to inhale it?

For a cough, sometimes being in a steamy shower helps to loosen the mucus and make the coughs more productive and less painful. And lots of fluids...easier said than done, I know.

@butterbean: As long as its baby vicks I would go ahead and use it. Its the menthol in the adult version you don't want to use. The baby vicks though does have some petroleum products in it, so I chose to make my own version with a bit of coconut oil, beeswax, and essential oils.

I wouldn't do it. Baby skin is really sensitive and will absorb it, and it doesn't work. Hopefully you have a nose frida, saline drops and a humidifier.

my 11week old DD has caught a cold :crying: and i'm trying to do everything i can to make her as comfortable as possible...

she doesn't have a fever, just a stuffy nose and cough. is she too young to put baby vicks on her feet (and cover with socks)?

i can deal with the stuffy nose but not the cough so any ideas that can help reduce her coughing would be appreciated
