@winter_wonder: Yes, white noise, and our room is not nearly as dark as his room! All good thoughts that hadn't occurred to me.

@foodiebee: hmm, this is tricky. Does he have music or white noise in his room? Possibly put in your room as well? Is it dark enough in your room? Just randomly trying to think of things!

@pachamama: @JJ2626: @winter_wonder: Thank you all for your responses. I wanted to wait a bit to respond because, low and behold, the day after I last responded, these sleep troubles have almost entirely vanished! He's waking maybe one night a week, but otherwise, it's markedly improved without us changing anything.

JJ2626, I wish we could get him to take to an earlier bedtime, but every time we try before 7 it's just a disaster. Sticking to a consistent 7 bedtime seems to be his sweet spot, at least right now.

Winter_Wonder, I would embrace bed sharing, especially if he wakes early in the morning, but taking him into our bed seems to just communicate to him that it's time to get up. Tips?

Baby sleep is the worst! How do you feel about bed sharing for awhile? We did this bc I couldn't function at work with so little sleep. I'm so sorry, it is HARD.

@foodiebee: You’re not going to like this but I would try an even earlier bedtime. If he wakes up at 2:30 from his nap, he should be lights out in crib at 6:30, maybe even 6. It could be a regression, in which case, if earlier bedtime doesn’t work, then yes I would do CIO. It might be quicker and easier than you think! Good luck! I know it sucks.

@foodiebee: I'm sorry you're going through all this, your summer does not sound fun! I have been your exact spot with my now 18 month old. He just could NOT fall asleep independently- he did the wake up thing after 45 minutes like clockwork for months. We did have to CIO (worked like a charm) and every 4 months or so have to do it again but he never cries that long. They learn so quickly that you will come :bummed: . For me it was a mental health thing. I was deteriorating with the interrupted sleep and tremendous anxiety it brought. My life is much better now. I hope this helps, maybe?

Sigh. Reviving this post from a couple months ago to ask for more advice. Since I posted asking how what was going on with 13mo DS's wake-ups 30 min to 1 hour after going to bed, he's gotten tubes and they've been amazing for his ear infections. So wonderful for about a month! And then...

For the past two weeks, DS has been increasing waking more each night. And more. And more. Last night he woke every two hours. The first two wake ups he put himself back down within 5 minutes. The other wake ups required DH to go in and rock him to calm him down, then put back in the crib calm but awake to put himself back to sleep. But he still woke again, and again. We've had 2-3 wakings each night for about a week solid, if not 2 weeks. (I'm sleep deprived. All my days run together because I never leave the house right now. I honestly can't remember.)

We are exhausted. We were excited yesterday because we thought we had it all worked out: 2.5 hour nap, woke at 2:30 from nap, bedtime started at 6:40, in bed at 7. He ended up waking up every two hours. :crying:

The past three nights DS has had some manner of tantrum before bed (a new development. Toddlerhood?). Last night we changed up the bedtime routine a bit and it seemed to help smooth that over.

I guess we're just afraid that we're going through a 1 year sleep regression and we're going to need to CIO to get him back to good sleep after this. My in-laws are living with us right now because of covid and we dread CIO with them here. This has been one the hardest summers for us emotionally because of covid stuff and we just don't know if we have CIO in us right now, but we're afraid if we don't we'll pay for it after the regression passes.

Is CIO the only option to fix this? Does it sound like the 1 yr sleep regression to you? This is probably very rambling but Mama. Is. Tiiiirrrreeeedddd. :meh:

@LadyDi: Oh wow, that's wild! I wondered about a sleep regression too, but I thought it lasting this long would be odd for a regression. Maybe I'm wrong about that?

@Jess1483: So sorry! His total nap time during the day is 2-2.5 hours. First nap is almost always 1 hour, second 1-1.5 hours. Wake window before bed is right around 4 hours.

My first inclination is to say ears, but could it also be a sleep regression? Not exactly the same by my 2 year old has always woken up halfway through his afternoon nap, screams his head off for a few minutes, then passes back out for another hour or so and then wakes up completely pleasant. It's really odd but he's done it off and on his whole life (only during naps, not at night). Going in made it worse so now I just ignore him, even though he's really pitiful, and he falls back asleep.

It certainly could be ears, but just in case it’s not:

How long is his last wake window before bed? And I imagine he takes two naps? 4-5 hours of daytime sleep is on the higher end. I’m wondering if his wake time before bed is just a touch too short? So he’s tired enough to crash, but not to stay asleep?

@bhbee: @KT326: @winter_wonder: Thank you all so much for the responses, even to support the ear pain. He's had this infection since the first week of April. We've had to switch prescriptions already once because the other was no helping. Poor little one has had constant infections since mid January. The ENT just won't see him right now. When he does clear up from one infection, he makes it 2-5 days before he gets another. We're hopeful he will get tubes in May. We had been doing pain meds but stopped doing it by default because I was getting uncomfortable with the constant pain meds. He's had so much in his system with all these meds! It was making me nervous. But I don't want him to be in pain! It's such a sad situation, and he's just pitiful.

Are you doing any pain meds? Maybe try Tylenol an hour before bed and see if it helps? I know you wouldn’t want to do that forever but might be helpful info to talk to your pedi. My kids have definitely had ear infections that didn’t clear up all the way and basically constant fluid until they got tubes (which I know isn’t on the table these days).

Otherwise could just be a random thing that will get better. I wouldn’t worry at all about doing the pickups in the short term since his other sleep habits all seem good.

I feel your pain because our toddler started a terrible nighttime sleep phase recently and we don’t know why but it’s awful!

I agree with PP, it could be his ears. Even if the infection is clearing up he could still have fluid in his ears causing pressure when he lays flat. My ped said it could take 3-4 weeks for the fluid to completely go away.

I wonder if it's his ears. When my DD was younger it seemed to be painful for her to lay flat when she had an ear infection. During those times, I often slept with DD in the recliner. I would see if you can get the ears rechecked after meds are done and things are still the same.

I know we're all dealing with coronavirus stresses and maybe baby sleep is the last thing on everyone's minds, but we're at a loss and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for this.

Our 10mo DS has yet another ear infection. He has about three days left on his current antibiotics. Naps are averaging 2 - 2.5 hours most of the time. We really try to stick to wake windows a lot. His sleep got thrown off at night with the infections, but he is sleeping through the night until 6 a.m. again now. Bedtime is 7-7:30. However, in the past week at least, he's started this habit of waking about 30 minutes to an hour after going to bed -- and screaming his head off. Just absolutely losing it. One minute he's asleep and the next he's sobbing. We've tried letting him CIO with pop ins but the popping in seems to only make it even worse and he will just scream and scream until we relent (we don't know if it's because he's in pain with his ears and we don't want to leave him in that state for a long cry). We go in and pick him up, calm him in our arms, and once he calms down he settles and falls back asleep super quickly, but it's like he needs us to calm him. He can't (won't?) do it on his own. After that he'll sleep through the night, and any future wakings that happen, he's able to put himself back down.

We're at a loss as to what's causing the wake up -- is he in pain from his ear? A nightmare? A bad habit picked up from all these weeks of unending ear infections? I've read that it can be because of poor napping, but now that we've been home with quarantine we've actually got a pretty good nap schedule going and he seems to be doing well with it, minus random off days. Any thoughts?
