@MsMini: I'm so with you on walkers being banned!

They're pretty frowned upon in New Zealand and I will not be buying / using one for our family!

We are also avoiding the walker, but have a wooden push walker for DS. We got him this one off amazon:

@prettylizy @msmini: They are banned here in Canada because (from what I read) parents didn't supervise their babies properly and a few went down the stairs. You can't even bring them over the border from the US. The Customs people will confiscate them from you. It's pretty hardcore.

Considering my inlaws let my DH in one and he went down the stairs in it, (they swear that never happened, but I'm more likely to believe his actual mom versus his crazy grandmother/mom) I'm against them anyway.

Question - why do you need a walker? Don't kids just learn to pull themselves up and get help from Mom and Dad (and chairs and sofas and bed, etc) when they are learning to walk?

That wooden push walker is so sweet!

We didn't use a walker either, my husband was against it, because his sister used one with her first son, and he didn't even attempt to stand alone until he was 18 months. That could have been a function of readiness, but I didn't want to get into a debate with my husband about it and we didn't really need an extra piece of gear in our small apartment.

I wish I could find the push walker I had with my son for a decent price, we loved it! It was a parents around the block walker. I'm kicking myself for selling it, it was $75 new nowit's over $130 on amazon. Ugh

I thought the danger with them was that babies can hurt themselves quite seriously. They zoom along and run over something, the walker stops/slows and they topple over through momentum. I am not sure if they are still legal here. I do know that there have been numerous cases of babies ending up with serious head injuries.

This is one of the links that the nurse at my pediatrician's office provided me (on one of the handouts they provided about hip dysplasia):

http://www.livestrong.com/article/356242-the-effects-of-bad-posture-on-growth/

"Weight-bearing positions, found with baby bouncers or walkers, can also lead to micro-repetitive stress syndrome. Infants four to 11 months old are not developed enough to bear their own weight, and this can lead to orthopedic or spinal problems later in life."

Not encouraging/discouraging it but just sharing what I found out from my pediatrician.

We had this in red: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001Q6M6VS/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000TCV0MQ&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0JXAYZTBP4ZMND3FPP8H

It was great since it was also a bouncer, a sit in walker and when they got good at that it converts to a stand up push car.

I think the main reason pediatricians are not in favor of walkers are because of the ability to fall down stairs. We used it on the main floor of the house and had no stairs down. My daughter is 3 and has no issues that I know of with her legs or hips.

I heard similar things about swaddling (from other mommys). At first swaddling DID seem kind of constricting but at the same time, they were all cramped in our tummies for months so I figured it's the same thing? Sigh. This parenting business is hard/stressful. Every parent wants to do the right thing but every doctor, parent, friend has different opinions, like you said. I like to hear everyone's opinions and take them all into consideration before forming my own. So i love hearing from fellow HB mamas.

One thing that I HAVE noticed with my son, since we avoided anything walker/bouncer related is that his walking skills have far exceeded other kids his age. He's 21 months and is really good at climbing stairs and can even balance on a wide beam. And he never went through the waddling like a duck phase. Not sure if that has anything to do with the walker/bouncer thing but just something I noticed about him.

We have hardwood floors but no stairs, if we had stairs I'd be way more concerned. I'm learning all kinds of new things this time around. My dh just told me the other day that we need to stop swaddling because it's not good for their mobile skills, I think everyone has a different opinion on everything!!!

@StbHisMrs: I don't know if they're advised against necessarily by all docs but my pediatrician is ultra conservative and recommended we not use one. I'm not totally against it though. We have hardwood floors and long stairs and i'm just more scared that LO will roll down the stairs or crash into furniture and hurt himself/herself.

My brother and I both used walkers and we were totally fine too (for the most part) :)

I know a lot of my friends who bought baby walkers from cosignment stores for a fraction of the price. Those are usually available in abundance since most parents want to get rid of it as soon as the LO outgrows it (takes up too much space!) So maybe try a local cosignment store?

We didn't use a baby walker or a bouncer (per my pediatrician's suggestion) with my first LO. With #2 I may use a bouncer but will probably avoid the walker again. Something about walkers being bad for hip and knee development. But I'm sure that if you use it for short periods of time, it should be ok.

Seems like we just keep buying and buying and buying for Maddy. Now we're looking at getting her a walker. Pretty soon we won't have room to walk!
I really wish I could find a Peg Perego Walk 'N Play http://it.pegperego.com/babyproducts-catalog/Walk%27n+Play+Jumper/ but I don't think it's available in the US.
