It really depends on your flight attendant. Once or twice I was allowed to keep her in the ergo but more often than not, I had to take her out of it. Even though I held her the same way...

I was told I would have to take her out for take off and landing. I generally didn't keep her in it durig the flight anyway just for comfort. I have heard several different reasons for it so I don't think the flight attendants really know why.

If you are flying with a nursing infant, I found the travel Boppy to be really helpful and worth the extra thing to carry.

I've always been told to hold the baby for takeoff and landing. I was once told that in an emergency if they need to help either of you that they don't have time to figure out how to unwrap/unbuckle a carrier.
Also, the forward thrust projectile baby theory.

Interesting! And probably varies each airline. I only fly Delta, and when LO was in a carrier (Moby wrap & sling) they never said a word about removing him. Now that we bring his carseat, they tell me to put him in it for take off only. I haven't had anyone tell me to put him in for landing yet.

@ineebee: The rule I've been told is that baby cannot be tethered to you via a carrier. So you can hold baby with your hands (on your lap), just not be joined via a strap.

This is a rule that seems to be inconsistently applied. However, while wearing an Ergo carrier, I've been able to convince them that by unhooking the back, the Ergo is now a "blanket". :silly:

I've been told to take LO out of the baby carrier during takeoff and landing before. But a couple times they just looked at me (LO was sleeping) and didn't bother to tell me. I think that is the correct rule though.

I'm confused, too. You don't have to buy a seat for babies, right? And if you don't, then where is the baby supposed to go if not in your lap/in the carrier during take-off/landing? We're traveling on a plane when our LO will be 7-8w old and hope not to have to buy him a seat...

The rationale is that your lap child is safer as a projectile if there were an emergency. If you think about the forward thrust, you would squash the baby if it were strapped to you and you were strapped into your seat.

I'm confused, wouldn't the seatbelt go under the baby and not around/top of him/her? My immediate thought would be that the baby would be safer strapped to me if anything happened, than just on my lap and free to go flying off somewhere.

We’ve flown a lot with LO and it’s been our experience that we only got hassled to take her out of the carrier during takeoff and landing and then only inconsistently.

Keep in mind too that if you wear a baby through security, they can (and for me, always did at bigger airports) test your hands for bomb/whatever residue. Not a big deal, but annoying.

It has been inconsistent for us. We mostly fly in Europe (since we live here) and most companies require you to use the infant seat belt that hooks through the adult seat belt for take off and landing and anytime the seatbelt sign is on. Because of that, I never fly with the baby carrier on.

@Baby Boy Mom: I think in major turbulence the force of your body could crush the baby, same thing as belting them to your lap in a car.

Yeah I've dealt with this, very inconsistently though. I always wondered the rationale. When the baby was just loose on my lap I was afraid he would fly out of my hands, but maybe that's safer than being attached? Not sure.

We have flown a lot, and it's inconsistently enforced - some airlines said they weren't supposed to let us, but let us anyway, and some made us take her out of it. They always gave the same rule - that the carriers weren't tested or rated like seatbelts - so I assume that it really isn't allowed. It was only for take-off and landing though.

I haven't had an issue with this since we have always bought LO a seat, but I am aware of it--I think it is probably dependent on the flight attendant whether or not they enforce it. It is much safer to have baby out of the carrier in the event of major turbulence.

I overhead a flight attendent tell man babywearing (I think it was a Moby) that when the fasten seatbelt sign is on that the child needs to be out of the baby wearing gear. That the baby can go back into it when the fasten seatbelt sign is off. I think the man and his wife was thrown off by it. His wife understood because I guess the baby wearing gear isn't TSA tested, but they seem to have an newborn. I felt bad for them, I could hear the little baby crying during take off and landing. I did write myself a note so I would remember for the future.

Did you know about this rule? How did you work around it?
