Loved my boba wrap until she was able to fit into my Ergo without an insert! I suck at wrapping but I went to a mtg with my loves babywearing group and figured it out in no time!

@Mrs. Pajamas: Thank you! And yeah back carrying my toddler was initially why I got it and then I just never did. He is a great walker (can walk long distances no problem and not a runner at all) so I ended up feeling it wasn't necessary. But I knew it would really come in handy if we ever had #2! I'm happy because it's still never been used so it feels like something "new" still for this baby.

@SweetiePie: I use the lille carrier every day to wear my 6 week old on the way to/from preschool for my older dd. I roll up a little blanket (taken from the hospital!) To put in the middle under her bum. The neck support is awesome with that carrier and it's totally fine from day one with newborns from what I've read. Granted dd2 came home just shy of 8 pounds so maybe if ds2 is super tiny hold off?

Related note, but that carrier is also totally awesome for back carrying a toddler. Me and DH carried dd1 all over Italy last fall and use it on hikes all the time!

PS If you want to use your Ergo, you can get infant inserts for pretty cheap from local groups a lot of the time. It's one of those things people are looking to get rid of fairly frequently since baby outgrows it quickly.

I loved loved loved my Solly wrap for my second. It was all the coziness of a wrap but because it's stretchy I could take him in and out without having to retie. It was comfortable for me until about 18 pounds which for us was about 5 months old. Now I use the Tula, ring sling, and wrap depending... LO is almost a year.

@ottilie I plan on going to a local store next time and trying ring slings and other options. We have ones that let you rent for a period and try. I will say the k'tan is awesome for the early days and simple. My son was big, 9 pounds, so I think the sizing was a little tricky but as a first step for a non-SSC carrier it is a good place to start.

@sweetiepie my son was big and we did use the Lillebaby very early on with the receiving blanket frog style, it was great. I used it alot for walking the dog, shopping and other longer things. I just like the appeal of a wrap for around the house, less bulk, but I never figured out the solly wrap I bought. I definitely recommend the Lillebaby for infants though, it did work beautifully for us.

I bought the Nesting Days carrier for #2 but didn't really end up using it much. It seemed great in theory because I could use it right away but when I'd put her in it, she would cry. She was just happier in her rock n' play.

@SweetiePie: I think a SSC like the Lille baby (which we have) is fine for a newborn for like going on an actual walk but I've never used it to baby wear around the house. For number 1 I didn't really need to do that so I just used a borrowed ktan I had a few times but I'm guessing with number 2 you want something that is comfy for around the house and has no bulk.

Another vote here for the K'tan. I used it when LO was a newborn. I wanted something simple without having to learn all the various wraps (which sounds even more complicated with a toddler underfoot), and it fit the bill. With regards to sizing concerns, there is a calculator and other tips on their website: https://www.babyktan.com/sizing. I also was able to take one out of the box to try it on at BBB. My suggested size felt snug at first but worked out well. If it starts to stretch out, running it through the washer/dryer works well.

Thanks everyone! I remember looking for a baby wearing group before I had my son, but found nothing close by; but we've since moved so that's a good reminder to look again @macsunshine. Thanks!

I know it's pretty personal what works for each person/baby but having some more advice is so helpful. Going to look at all your suggestions now - leaning towards either the solly or a ring sling, so we will see! Thanks again

I didn't babywear at all with my first, but with my 2nd I bought a used K'tan to try, and I love it. Its really easy to put on and there are different positions depending on the age of the baby. I've been using it from 6 weeks to 6 months now.

@hony bologna: I have been trying to use my ring sling with my newborn and wondering why I didn't like it or if I was doing it wrong! So I'm glad you wrote that. I really enjoyed wearing my toddler in a ring sling so I hope I'll like wearing this baby once they're older and can support their head.

I'm enjoying using a Tula with an infant insert. I have used it right away this time. I also have an infantino wrap that seems to work well. For sturdiness and ability to be hands-free, the Tula is what works for me and what makes me feel comfortable to be hands free around the house for things like cooking and dishes. So for me it would be worth it to get the ergo newborn insert if I was you!

I love woven wraps since they're so versatile, comfy (more so than SSCs), and you can use them the longest (well through toddlerhood), but there's definitely a learning curve for using them. I still wrap my almost-3-year-old every day. I liked the K'tan as well since it's 'pre-wrapped' for you; the Boba I found way too hot. I used ring slings on occasion, but you lose some range of motion in the arm that the sling is on, and you really can't be hands-free with a newborn in it, especially if your baby is napping, because there's nothing to stabilize his/her head.

@SweetiePie: I got it when DD was 3 weeks old and ended up needing to roll a receiving blanket up and put it underneath her to get her high enough. She didn't feel really secure in it until 8ish weeks. I think I might need to babywear earlier then that with the second. Slings and wraps just look better for itty bitty babies to me, but I have no practical experience with them.

My second pretty much lived in the Solly wrap for months. It was worth every cent. I had a Mobu wrap for my first and hated it but the Solly felt much more comfortable right from the start. It did take a little practice but I used it for everything.

Once he was 4-5 months I switched to the ergo. Although he is nowhere near the weight limit on the Solly wrap, I found it to get uncomfortable at about 15 lbs or so.

I also used the K'Tan when DD was tiny. It was a good pre-wrap carrier, that let me know I was interested in getting trying out some less idiot-proof traditional wraps. I recommend NOT going big because it will stretch out as you wear it.

I graduated to a tee shirt material wrap, then a woven one, and started using the Ergo more after LO was walking and ready for a backpack carry. I never got the hang of my ring sling; LO never felt as secure, and I was never as comfortable.

@SweetiePie: @periwinklebee: I used my lillebaby with LO2 as a newborn. I just kept her legs in frog style (similar to what you would do as a newborn in a wrap like a solly)

I babywear A LOT but I probably use my linen ring sling the most because it stores easy in my diaper bag and it's the fastest to pop LO in and out of. It's great for a newborn. when my LO was older (around 5 months) he liked to be worn on my hip so he could see outward. We used it daily till he was about 14 months and I was 6 months pregnant but could of kept going if not for the bump.

A structured carrier like lillebaby is good for longer walks (like hikes) and it's super long life I also like how you can wear multiple ways (front carry, back carry etc)

A solly wrap is easy to figure out and is lightweight. I used it the least though because it's more time consuming to put on and by 5 months my LO preferred to look out.

We used 2 different Ergos with DD1 but I was hesitant to use it much before 3 months. I bought a Solly for DD2 and so far I love it. We've only used it 3 times so far (she's only 2 weeks old) but it was way easier to tie and get her situated than I expected and she slept great in the wrap each time.

I love my solly! Also I have 2 ring slings from wildbird; once you get the hang of it it's so so easy to pop lo in and out of it. I wear lo2 so much more than I ever did lo1 so that we can be on the go more easily

Eta I also have a tula but the ring sling is my go to for ease of popping her in and out. Solly or tula are more comfy for long periods since the ring sling only distributes weight to one shoulder. I had an ergo, Bjorn one carrier, and moby for lo1 that I haven't used at all for lo2

@Mrs. Pickle: @SweetiePie: I'm wondering the same thing...I saw lillebaby marketed for newborns and was hoping it would allow me to get by with only buying one carrier rather than a wrap + structured carrier for later, but I don't know anyone who's actually used it with a newborn...
