@winniebee: Thanks! I hope that he eventually starts liking milk, but like you said, it's hard not to worry now when he's still such a peanut.

@Anagram: The highest F has ever been was 9th %-ile at our last appointment. I think tiny babies are just stressful no matter what their growth pattern is because you just know they really NEED to eat. If your LO ends up having MSPI and reflux, the changes you're implementing may make a huge difference. F went from 2%-ile to 9%-ile within a couple months when we finally got his meds right. Fingers crossed for you!

@winniebee: good to know! I hate this. We went from 50% in weight at 1 month, to 36% at 2 months, to 27% at 3 months....I'm worried about where she's going to end up if she keeps dropping in percentile s every month. I wouldn't be as concerned if she'd always been low, but the decrease and the fighting the bottle makes me worry.

@Anagram: @Mrs. Blue: I wanted to encourage you that in time, this may get better. Eventually my son became a bottle addict/milk addict, ha! Just keep offering milk and try to be patient and relax (it was very hard for me to relax with such a small baby, trust me!)

@Anagram: I know it's SO frustrating. If it's any consolation, F did much better eating after we got him on Prevacid (which came after Zantac)--not great, but better than the first couple months. Hang in there!

@Mrs. Blue: that's exactly like my LO! She'll basically only eat at this point when she's sleepy--problem is, right now she's not much of a napper so I literally spend my entire day trying to get her to fall asleep so I can feed her. ALL her feeds are dreamfeeds at this point, or she would really only be eating 12 oz a day on her own. I'm there with you, and YES it totally sucks. Everyone in my life has a suggestion or a solution, and I feel like I've tried them all and nothing words.

Just got back from the Ped today because of some blood in my baby's stool and am now going to try an MSPI diet and santac for potential silent reflux. joy.

@Mrs. Blue: When do you feed him? We had this issue as well. There was too much going on in the world for my son to drink a full bottle when he was alert. So, we fed him before naps and bed when he was sleepy and drowsy (in a dark room, with white noise). He would take a much bigger bottle that way (at that age probably 4 oz when he woke up and 6 oz before naps and bed with a smaller late afternoon snack bottle). I know experts say don't do it, it's a sleep crutch, but it worked for us...and my son has been a great night sleeper since 8 months so I sort of poo poo the idea that "nursing" to sleep is a bad idea.

@Mrs. Blue: yes! It was such a struggle to get J to drink anything, nursing, bottles, anything. He was never one of those kids that would down 6oz in a sitting. Ever.
We started adding dairy to his diet as soon as we got the ped's okay. He loves yogurt and cheese. I mixed breastmilk into oatmeal but you're right about it getting too thin, so it's only like an ounce or so.

Once we graduated to straw cup it got better, but he still doesn't chug milk like other kids.
(And he's perfectly healthy, no concern from the ped)

Honestly, I'd personally listen to your kid and give more solids. Can you give really high fat, high protein ones? Beans, cheeses, meats, etc? I personally prefer to listen to their appetite, in general. My daughter is a little bird, and often doesn't eat much - but she's really healthy, really active, and really strong. She's clearly meeting her needs, so I let it be.

@T.H.O.U.: At his last appointment, we talked about how much he fights the bottle, and the ped have us some guidelines about how many ounces he should be eating at various points, but we had only just started solids, so I didn't ask about increasing solids since he fights milk so much. I'll def. talk to him about it at their appt next month.

@Mrs. Blue: Have you talked to your pediatrician about it? My friends son was just like this around 8 months. Her pedi finally said to just give in and let him have solids but really try to encourage milk or formula in a regular cup if possible. They found plenty of ways to get calcium in him and then he just ate a ton of healthy stuff.

I agree that food before one is "fun" but at the same point, it could be looked at in reverse that who says age one is the magical point where they can rely on other foods.

@MerryC: True! I say I can't wait for them to be on regular food, so I don't have to stress about bottles, but I'm sure some other worry will just replace this one. Such is the life of a mom, right? Thanks for the encouragement!

@looch: They are on a cow-milk based formula, so I guess I can put those things on the list of things to try. Thanks for the info!

@Mrs. Blue: Well at the very least, it will pass when he gets old enough to need less milk, lol. I will admit to being a measure happier now that my kids are off bottles and self feed. Hang in there, Mama. There's always something to worry about it seems, and it's hard when our kids don't follow the 'normal' track in some way, but you're doing a fantastic job with your boys!

@Mrs. Blue: M had a similar issue at that age. She would drink just enough to take the edge off and then quit. I know you're saying he's always been this way though, so maybe it's a different situation. What ended up helping us was switching to a faster flow nipple. I absolutely thought that was not the problem (she didn't seem frustrated drinking, she had reflux) but she did so much better with a faster flow! I think we went from a #1 to a #3. Took her a few days to get used to it but then it worked.

I hope you have an easier time soon, whatever the solution is. Feeding issues are so tough!

@MerryC: Thanks! We still feed every 3 hours to maximize his intake. I would love to think it was a phase, but it's been like this since he was about a month old. After 6 1/2 months, I'm losing hope that it will pass! I'll just keep fighting him to eat some more, but I think I might step up his solids a little bit, too.

@hilsy85: He eats every 3 hours from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Yeah, sometimes, I think he's enjoying torturing me! :) Distraction does sometimes help. Laying him down on a boppy and shaking a rattle near the bottle is one of my tricks. It's frustrating because I feel like if I were able to be home, I could make sure he gets enough. Our daycare is great, but with 10 kids in the room, there's no way they can spend the time I spend at home to get him to take a good feeding. I'll keep trying different cups. Maybe when he masters one, it'll be the magic trick to get him to drink his formula!

@Mrs. Blue: how many times a day is he eating? will it help if he's distracted while eating a bottle--like while sitting outside? I would also keep trying with the different cups--the playtex one that you squeeze to get the liquid up is supposed to be good, and we had success with the zoli cup. Good luck! these little stinkers love to make us worry :)

My kids were not solids lovers, but they definitely preferred smaller amounts of milk more frequently until almost a year. It was literally every 2.5 hrs most days. Maybe you've already tried this, but it might help get an extra serving or two in each day by feeding every 2ish hours. And I think the suggestion of milk in the purees might help too. I'd try to keep focusing on maximizing milk intake since he's still pretty little, but if he wants food, give him food too! And it could very well be a phase, he might not fight the bottle forever. My son went through a lot of these picky phases in infancy.

@Anagram: That is exactly how F has always been-he reacts just like your LO. So, if it's any consolation, there's definitely hope that your LO will love solids!

@Arden: I do that sometimes, but I can't really add more than maybe an ounce per feeding or it gets way to thin.

@hilsy85: Yes, we've tried other cups; I should have mentioned that. He can't figure them out yet. Our ped says he wants him to eat 20-15 ounces plus solids. He said to stay at 1-2 rounds of solids until 8 months and then we could move up to 3. I wouldn't worry too much about the days he would eat 18 ounces on his own, but on days when he would only eat 12-15, that would be way low without more solids. Our ped basically said even at a year, he should be drinking around 15 ounces of milk a day. Like you said, I feel like he needs to keep eating more milk, but I'm the only one that can get him to eat more--daycare and DH often have to give up after he heats 2.5-4 ounces. I'm just at a loss about what to do.

We're not at the feeding point yet but I thought of what @Arden: suggested, mixing formula into the purees. I know they often suggest mixing breast milk or formula into first foods, so it might work even though your guy is already a good eater.

@Mrs. Blue: my baby is JUST like this, minus the solids. She's only 3 months old so she's not eating solids yet but she hates the bottle and it's always a big struggle to feed her. She's also a happy baby and doesn't cry but would happily eat only 12 to 18 ounces a day and getting her to drink anything over that is a huge struggle.. Like... She'll cry, spit the bottle out, violently shake her head side to side to get away from the bottle, etc. I hope when we start solids she'll be into them because I hate the eating issues we have now.
