@Anagram: A quick update - we got her on prevacid and it got a lot better. She still has her days but NOTHING like it was before. Hopefully it stays on the upswing!

It got bad between 4.5-5 months for LO too. It seemed to be teething, distraction and trying to feed her more often. I'd feed her right after her nap when she was still sleepy and stretched out her feedings to 3+ hours. But the biggest difference was when those teeth popped just before her 5 mo birthday.

The only times my LO has been on a feeding "strike" was when she was teething. Not too early at all! Her first tooth cut through just a few days before she turned six months, and definitely bothered her for about a month prior. She totally refused to nurse in positions that irritated it (ie, refused the right boob, unless I let her sit up, straddling my leg) for about three weeks.

@AprilK: that supply is in the past! I was totally anal about my pumping schedule until LO was 5 months and I've slowly been cutting down.

Now I'm down to 4 short pumps a day total (and I don't BF)and I only make enough for Lo to eat, plus a couple of extra ounces. My LO is a little older than 7 months and I've been on this stupid MSPI diet for 4 months now and I'm pretty much over it and getting ready to slowly switch her over to an elemental formula slowly (we're trying Neocate) if I can get insurance to cover it.

@AprilK: and the food issue. You can go back and see that I posted a few months back, freaking out about what I would eat after my LO's MSPI diet. I got some not so helpful (for me, personally) advice like...oh, you can snack on nuts and eat a lot of salads and home make everything which sounded completely overwhelming for me at the time, since I was soon-to-be back at work, ravenous from pumping 45-50 oz a day, and just knew I wasn't going to have time to make everything from scratch and was going to be starving all the time.

BUT---good news! As it turns out, there are TONS of foods (yes, even processed foods) you can buy and eat when you don't have time to make something.

Of course, there are always the healthy options--you can eat any fruit, vegetable or meat (if it's fresh, you cook it yourself, or it's frozen and not in a sauce or something).

Bread---most store bought breads are out, but a lot of gluten free breads are also soy/dairy free AND strangely, a lot of the store french breads that are sold hot (up in the bakery section, not in the bread aisle) will be dairy and soy free.

Most hummus and pita CHIPS brands are dairy/soy free. Some pita breads have soy, you have to read labels. I eat hummus constantly now.

Trader Joe's is a godsend. TONS of their stuff is made with Canola oil instead of vegetable oil (which is made from soy). Any time I need a snack food/junk food fix, I go to Trader Joe's. You can get Spekuloos (spelling) cookies, or the ginger-molasses cookies, and even their cinnamon rolls in a can--ALL dairy and soy free and TJs is the only place I can find that stuff.

Skinny Pop and Trader Joe's Kettle corn are both dairy and soy free (a lot of other popcorns are made with veg oil).

The Simply Smart chicken fingers and nuggets line by Purdue is dairy and soy free. I mean, it's totally junk food...but sometimes you want junk food! https://www.perdue.com/products/simplysmart/

As a butter substitute, there's Earth balance brand "butter" that is in the red tub that is also soy free.

Sub almond milk (I like vanilla, unsweetened) for regular milk in cereals.

Cereals: Read labels. I've been surprised at what has soy or dairy and what doesn't. Shredded mini wheats, Life cereal, all the Chex cereals, Bear Naked granola and a lot more are dairy and soy free.

Coffee: if you drink coffee, you can substitute sweetened vanilla almond milk or the SoBee coconut milk creamers are really good in coffee. Sadly, Starbucks and DD have no dairy and soy free versions unless you like your coffee black.

You can cook/bake all kinds of things at home by substituting coconut milk or almond milk for the dairy.

Lemme know if you have any more questions.

@AprilK: after the doctor tested and told me it was there. I could see tiny faint streaks of blood sometimes. Then it went away since I was on the elimination diet and I didn't see it again for a few months until we tried Similac Alimentum for 2 days because I was super tired of the MSPI diet, but LO didn't tolerate that formula and had a couple MAJORLY bloody diapers.

@Anagram: oh my. I don't even know how I'd get enough calories to make enough milk for her on a diet like that! I struggle to make sure I eat enough/well as it is... So did you ever see blood in the stool? Or was is just the test the doc did? I've never seen any so I wondered if it was ever obvious.

@AprilK: yup, 100% elimination of dairy AND soy, even lecithin and soy oil (vegetable oil). After you've eliminated both dairy and soy for 2 weeks, you can try products with soy oil for a couple days then soy lecithin for a few days and see if you notice a reaction.

Our only symptoms were the not eating/crying when we put the bottle in her mouth (I switched to EPing) and then at 3 months we started getting blood in the stool.

The doctor did a test on a poopy diaper to check for blood and it came up positive even though I couldn't see blood.

@Anagram: that is what I'm saying- spending so much time force feeding this baby is not normal!

For the mspi elimination diet- does that include dairy in baked goods like bread? Or just things like milk, cheese, etc? How did you diagnose that it was that, was there a rash or just the behavior?

My LO did this off and on from 4 months onwards. I think their teeth bother them long before they actually come up. Also, with her, she was in a sleep fighting phase and nursing always has made her sleepy, so she wouldn't nurse in order to avoid sleep. She could go like 8 hours during the day having only an ounce. She got back on track though!

@AprilK: I've been through this, all of it! In our case it's a combination if things that we are still working on at 7 months...

MSPI, reflux, a possible oral motor issue....several things. And now I can't get her to eat solids, so it continues.

My doctor also kept saying there was nothing really wrong, but I was spending the majority if my day trying to force feed my baby, and I knew that wasn't normal.

Don't be afraid to advocate for your LO and keep asking for answers. Or as for a referral to a GI specialist.

Sorry.. I feel like this is long and disorganized but I am at the end of my rope with this!

My daughter will be five months old next week and for the past two months we've had time periods (days, or parts of days) where she simply refuses to eat. She will seem hungry but will only eat a little bit - maybe 1-2 ounces - by bottle or breastfeeding. I obviously can't fully tell how much she is getting by breastfeeding but I do know it's not a full feeding just based on how full I feel.

For awhile I thought she had thrush which would make eating painful, then I thought it was acid reflux making it painful. She will start to eat, then pop off and angry-coo at me. It's like she is chastising me for something, she gives me this big wide-eyed look and is all indignant. Up until recently I'd been able to rock her and get her sleepy and she'd eat then - but now she's refusing to do that too. I'll have to walk her around jiggling her to get her to fall asleep and she'll fall asleep with her mouth moving like she's eating but still won't eat if we try to feed her!

At daycare last week she had a few days where she refused all but maybe 1-1.5 ounces of each bottle. But she seems hungry, shows all the cues, then gets super pissed if you try to feed her. This week she's been taking some feedings but skipping at least one a day. It's usually a major struggle for them to get one of the feedings down her.

In the past, we've upped her acid relux medication and it got better. But I think we are at the maximum now and it doesn't seem to be helping. I wonder if it getting better with more acid reflux meds was just a coincidence. The doctor is unconcerned b.c her weight has been normal until now. But I just don't think it's normal for a baby to skip feedings. I don't think we should wait until she's dropping weight or is dehydrated to do something and I feel in my gut that there is something wrong. But no one seems to want to listen to me because her cheeks go on for days and she seems to be thriving.

So - my questions: Did your baby ever skip feedings? Did you ever find a reason behind it? If so, what was it? Is it normal for a baby to act hungry and then not eat?!
