@FaithFertility: Thank you for your reply! Can you tell me more about the raw oats thing? How exactly does that work? And what about clean-up? You can’t put that stuff down a shower drain...

@CatchAFallingStar: Ooh, yes I remember that breast milk has antibacterial properties! I’ll try this, thanks!

It’s gotten a lot better in the past few days, but there’s still a little bit of crusting in some places. She also smells weird. But I’m glad it’s under control and baby isn’t SO uncomfortable anymore. I can definitely wait til our appointment on Thursday.

Any other advice is still more than welcome! I’d love to figure out how to protect her skin going forward!

Have you tried applying breast milk to the skin at all? I’ve heard it works wonders. Maybe Google and do a little research on it.

@ineebee: I'm sorry! DS almost 2 yrs has horrible eczema! We just are on the end of a flare up just like you stated! He was prescribed Mupirocin anti optic and a kenalog cream to help inflamation!
Those both can not go on his face so for there he had a low dose hydrocortizone! It look about 5 days, for it to dry and heal!
If not he had prednisone as a back up to stop infection.

We bathe but shy away from soap as much as possible
Raw oats in bath help the skin calm down, he likes it! Also dry off really really well!!!

@gotkimchi: We saw the ped a few weeks ago and we also have an allergist doctor friend - they both say it’s definitely eczema. But I haven’t even considered impetigo and don’t even know what it is! I’ll look into it, thanks!

@periwinklebee: Thank you for this! I wouldn’t have known not to put the steroid cream on spots where the skin is broken. I do file her nails everyday, but the oozing parts aren’t even where she scratches. She scratches at her cradle cap, but that’s manageable. Something to tell the derm, I suppose. Thank you!!

We've had repeated issues with scratching leading to infection. The doctor can give you a prescription antibiotic ointment. But in the meantime, as long as it's not really nasty, I would imagine that an OTC antibiotic ointment like Neosporin would perform a similar function. We were told not to put the steroid cream anywhere with broken or oozing skin. The only thing that has worked to prevent infection for us is filing fingernails everyday (initially scratch mittens helped, but now he knows how to take them off), but sometimes he still manages to break the skin  I know it's relatively minor in the grand scheme of ailments, but I still really hate seeing my son uncomfortable from it. I hope your LO finds relief soon!

Are you sure it’s eczema? Do you have a pic? Is it on her face? Sounds like impetigo??

Eczema showed up around 2 months. It spread to face, arms, legs, then the symptoms went away with a few days of a steroid cream and we managed with Cetaphil. Now it’s back with a vengeance, and there are a few spots that look “weepy” and wet, a few spots that are crusted over and even a blister-looking spot. Poor baby.

Urgent cares around here are either closed for the day or don’t take patients under 12 months (baby is 4mo). I’m just wondering what doctors have told others to do in these situations.

I’m planning on bathing her and then starting her on the steroid cream again. We have a derm appointment for Thursday but if I can help her be more comfortable sooner than that, it would be great! Any advice is welcome! Thank you!
