DD#1 got her first hair cut on her 18m birthday at the Magic Kingdom. The person who cut it did a great job (although there wasn't much to cut more just needed shaped up a little). They made a big deal out of it being her first hair cut with lots of Mickey stickers and glittery stuff and a pair of Mickey ears that are embroidered with "first haircut" on the back.

@Mrs. Marbles: I just took my LO to Snip-its on Sunday and it was awesome! Granted, you pay $25 plus tip for a less than 10 minute hair cut but there were no tears and it was easy peasy so to me that is worth the money. If there is one near you, I highly recommend it. They have a $3 coupon off first hair cuts on their website but I totally forgot to use mine. Doh!

DD#1 was born with a ton of hair. I should've had it cut at 8 months or so, but it's a cultural thing to wait a year. So she had it done at around 14 months when my mom was in town for a visit. We took her to a kiddie salon because I was also afraid of using scissors on her especially because she had bangs that needed trimming. we took her again maybe two or three times after that. It can get pricey at $30 plus tip (here in Manhattan)... So now I think I'll just give her trims at home. She's almost 4 now, so not so squirmy anymore. Plus we grew her bangs out because they were so difficult to maintain.

Our son had a ton of hair from the beginning so my cousin (who used to cut hair) trimmed it when he was 3 months old. Now, my husband does it and he does a really great job.

I brought my son just a few weeks ago, it was getting long and in his face.

I brought him to the salon where my Dad gets his hair cut. The stylist plopped him on my lap and chopped away with the scissors and the electric razor. I was surprised at how well both he and the stylist did! FWIW he is 12 months.

Unfortunately I won't have to worry about a hair cut for a while... my LO just has a little mohawk growing. My plan was to just take her to my salon, the owner is a good friend of mine. But if she's an extra squirmy little girl, I'll probably take her to the children's salon because they'll have more experience with squirmyness.

Our son Rob Jr. had a ridiculous amount of hair that stuck straight up for the first 6 months. As it fell over, it became pretty unruly.

We took him to the local children's barber chain, Snip-Its. Not sure if it's national or not, but the place looks like the set of a demented children's tv show (think the old school Double Dare, or Steampipe Alley), with crazy coolored pipes and fiberglass characters, tv screens, toys and candy available: everything including the kitchen sink to distract a child from the scary clippers and scissors.

The older lady who did his hair was clearly a pro and buzzed/snipped away RJ's hair in 2 minutes, almost before he knew what was going on. Cost about 20 dollars before tip (super pricey, yes), but felt like a small price to pay for a nearly tearless first experience. We too are terrified of doing it ourselves and mangling his look (or his ear).

Snip-Its. It wasn't cheap nor did RJ end up super stylish, but they got the job done.

charlie got his first haircut when he was 13 months old. we went to a children's salon and they gave him the worst bowlcut ever.

now we have this guy that comes to our house and he's fantastic. always gives charlie a great cut!

oh and my mom tried to cut charlie's hair a couple of months ago and cut some of his bangs way too short. it only recently grew out! 75% of charlie's looks are in his hair so i can't mess with it!

Little M is 10 months now but her hair is really getting in her face, to the point where she starts to yelp when her bangs are in her eyes. I really don't want to cut her hair, but it's getting too thick to just clip to the side. When did your LO get his/her first haircut and did you go to a professional or do it yourself? I am petrified of even cutting her nails, let alone take scissors to her head when she's so squirmy! If you went to a professional, did you go to a childrens' barber?
