$9-12 per hour for one child. I try to stay on the $9-10 range but we did have one babysitter that was phenomenal, did dishes and laundry, and was worth $12 per hour!

We pay $20/hr for one kid, every Saturday (that she's available. She also has a life so we compare schedules every few weeks).
As I mentioned in the other sitter pay thread, that's the higher end it normal but still "normal" in my city.

@abdubbs: So I just put a post out on a local mommy group. This one girl watches 4, four!!!, kids, the youngest is under 1 and she gets paid $10/hr!
My average is around 5-10 for two kids.

Do you have a local mom group you can ask?

@regberadaisy: I try to have her about once a month even if we don't have anything planned. It works for everyone - keeps the kids used to her, and gets us out of the house :) I know so many people who use daycare teachers....it's a great resource and they probably have friends, too!

Third spin-off question! (Didn't realize I had so many questions about this... am definitely over thinking things).

Is dealing with twins (as a babysitter) more difficult that dealing with two siblings of different ages, and worthy of more pay? Or is it more the fact that they are infants vs older children?

I think I am just so traumatized by the handful of times they've had synchronized full-on meltdowns, that I feel I need to preemptively pay more in the event that a sitter may have to experience those awful double screams/cries. I don't want anyone else (except maybe my husband, ha) to ever have to deal with those moments, they are so hard!

@yoursilverlining: @abdubbs: I agree, it's never too early to teach girls/ young women to know their value- time & effort have value- and not be afraid to say so. I think the first family I began babysitting for approached me with the rate $6 or $7 and I was 12 or 13 and the kid was 5 or 6. That family set the pay scale and I charged a family of a diaper- wearing baby an dollar extra. Based on the rates on this thread I would probably insult a sitter if they left it up to me pick the rate- a $1 over minimum wage is what I would offer.

$10/hr for 2 kids. She usually doesn't have to handle dinner, just play time and bed time. She drives to my house so I usually bump up for that.

I pay my 12 year old niece $5/hr to do mothers-helper stuff. Sometimes I leave her home with the toddler while I run an errand or two with the baby.

@Mamaof2: Young college students, 18-20. Not quite ready to leave the littles with anyone younger than that just yet (although I used to babysit when I was only 11... what were those parents thinking??? ha).

Although that makes me think of a secondary question... if you had younger sitters over as a "mother's helper" while you're still at home (I'm thinking middle school or young high school aged), what would you pay them? I've had a few offer to help out for free just to play with the babies, but I feel like I should give them something at least.

We haven’t hired a real babysitter yet, but paid a young teen $10/hour to be a mother’s helper while I was doing work at home. I’d pay a babysitter between $10-$15/hour.

Total aside and sort of off-topic, but I just want to say that I was *exactly* like those girls when I was a preteen and teen babysitting – I didn’t want to state a rate because I didn’t want to alienate anyone, or risk being rude in any way. Our mother’s helper was the same, and would have taken a lot less than $10/hour, but I said I thought that was a fair starting point for her time. A friend of my mom’s who I babysat for often (who later became a great mentor/friend to me) was mad when I wouldn’t stand up for myself and spent a lot of time explaining that women need to advocate for themselves regarding pay, starting with teenage babysitting gigs. She really impressed on me that my time is worth more than pennies. That talk is something I’ve thought about often since then, especially when I’m negotiating salary/benefits. Her words really helped me!

I actually just reached out on my local Facebook group about this and the answers ranged from $10-20 an hour (I'm in queens, NY) I'm hiring a friend of a friend who is doing this on the side for extra cash and I'm planning on paying her $15/hour. Oh and this for one kid, a 2.5 year old.

Wow, everyone here pays so much. I do $10 an hour for both my kids. Everyone who has watched my kids said that was a very generous rate for how minimal I have them do -- most of the time the kids are already down for the night.

Which is exactly why I want to make sure I'm paying them fairly, even if they don't have the courage to say what they feel like they deserve to be paid.
