If there is going to be drama which would make you not trust the situation (sounds like SIL might tell her not to listen to you) then I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't do this with a stranger or a family member. Luckily, we have close friends who have watched our son and it's turned out great.

Thanks! I guess I just worry that if I had an issue with my niece (aka needing to ask her to clean up better, or please keep the TV off while LO is awake) that my SIL might judge me for it or make a big deal of it.

I like the idea of using CPR certification as an excuse.

I would rather have an adult babysit but if it's a choice between 2 teens then I would go with the family member unless you do not think she would do a good job and there would be drama. It's easier to "fire" a stranger after all.

I think it depends on the family member. Personally I'd feel more comfortable with family..... but that's only if I really really trust that family member.

I don't think it's offensive to pick a stranger over family. You could always make up an excuse like you want someone CPR certified.

Would anyone consider a stranger teenager to babysit over a family teenager? My niece is 15 and currently lives 25 min away but when she starts driving might be a good sitter. But I dot know f I want to go there with family. Just the positivity of drama that I want to avoid. Is this odd? Is there a chance the will be offended.
