We rarely have a babysitter but when we do, it's one of lo's former daycare teachers, and I completely trust her to take lo anywhere since they go on daily outings at daycare already (and she has in fact taken lo to a children's museum while babysitting). But, we're in NYC and they walked, so the driving aspect is totally not something I've had to think about!

I generally avoid both fast food restaurants and Chuck E Cheese. I might feel pressured into going for another kid's birthday party if my son was close friends with that child. But I would not opt into going for any other reason. So I would decline for that reason.

I would be ok with an outing that I would actually endorse, such as the park or a museum or a performance.

I wouldn't have a problem with her taking them out but I wouldn't want to move car seats around - I'd ask her to stay home.

While I would be fine with a regular nanny taking my kids out, I see no reason why a date night babysitter needs to do so. By 5 pm we are starting the dinner/bath/bed time routine, so there is plenty to do without needing to leave the house. I would tell her you would prefer that they stay home.

@Mamaof2: It sounds like a hassle to move the car seats for one night out. Could you compromise and get a fun treat for them to enjoy at home so she can "spoil" them there? I would just say it's too much to move the carseats.

Our part time nanny takes the kids out, which I think is great. We keep carseats in her car for this reasons and she knows our kids well and what we are comfortable with them doing. I don't think it would be worth the hassle and worry for me if it were just an occasional babysitter though.

I agree with what @lamariniere: said, or your walking idea if you are cool with her taking them out. Personally though, I would feel so much more comfortable with them at home because you know where they are and that they are safe. (However, I am just waiting for my first baby to come out in the next week or two so I am just basing that on how I feel right now). If it was family babysitting I would be fine with them taking them out I think.

@BandDmommy: chuck-e-cheese does offer food but we only go there for the games

@Anagram: that's the other thing - we would have to put the car seats in her car and she drives a tiny car which makes me thing God forbid she was in an accident my kids would be crushed!!

@lamariniere: They can walk to Chuck-e- cheese - maybe I will suggest that

I let my babysitters take the kids out, but they use public transit. I would probably be nervous about someone else driving them. I would tell her thanks for the offer but you think your younger LO needs to eat dinner and be in bed at X time. Maybe a compromise could be to order pizza in?

I would be fine with it, at those ages.....is she taking your car? Or would you put the carseats in her car? Actually, I would suggest that she choose one of those places, and be home 30 minutes before bed time.

ETA: I guess my opinion is that it's fine because my mom (retired teacher) babysits for a few kids in her neighborhood and she takes them allll over. They LOVE going over to her house and also call her "nana", like her grandkids do. She has even taken some of them on overnight trips (their parents love it). She takes them to educational places, like museums and historic monuments. My mom is a very young-acting 70.

If I felt uncomfortable I would not let her. And it is totally understandable, first time with a different babysitter, 5-10 pm at night, nope. I would feel the same way.

I would be ok with Chick Fil A, but not Chuck-E-Cheese. She can spoil them at CFA, but there is less of a chance of someone getting lost. And, I would add the stipulation that they need to be home by bedtime (whenever that is).

I would be fine with it in that situation (I wouldn't be with a teenager). - my aunt watches my daughter for an aftn Once a month and always takes her around town for lunch, ice cream, to the park...basically my daughters favourite day of the month lol
If you're not comfortable with it though, that's totally understandable!

do you let her take the kids out to do stuff or have them stay home?

Our normal babysitter is busy so we are having a different DCP teacher watch the kids - she is 55 and adores my kids and the feeling is mutual.

She asked me if she could take them to Chic-fil-a and chuck-e-cheese and spoil them - I told her I would think about it.....

truth is I am not sure if I want her driving them all over - I would feel better if they stayed home - plus my DD doesn't nap so she needs an earlier bedtime otherwise she has huge tantrums.

Kids are 4.5 and 7

I do trust her watching my kids but again, something just bothers me about her driving them all over.

WWYD?

Its from 5-10pm if it matters
