Shoe fit is too important to leave it up to the chance of finding a good deal. I buy locally and I buy two pairs at a time. There's no need for more than that.

My son was in size 5 at 12 months, size 6 at 18, size 7.5 at 24 and is in size 8 now at 28 months.

My LO was a 3 for the longest time, then didn't last long at the next few sizes. A year later and he's around a size 7. So, I say you get the next size. :)

From age 15 to 19 months my little guy was wearing a 5W in Stride Rite shoes. At 20 months now, we just changed into 6W which still gives him some room in the front. He could probably still fit into the 5W with thinner socks. If you're fitting the 4 perfectly right now, I would get the 5 for fall.

Also, take his foot width into consideration. It's hard to go up a size if they have very narrow feet. I have a feeling we'll rarely be able to size up.

In that situation I would bump up to 5 since he could conceivably wear those beyond fall especially if you live somewhere that has a long winter. DS at 19 month is in 5.5. He's growing about a half size every 3 or 4 months. I made the mistake of buying a lot of shoes on sale for DD and trying to estimate her size for next year and ended up with a lot of shoes that didn't fit or were the wrong season. Now I never buy shoes in advance except for seasonless shoes like school shoes and crocs.

I just went to stride rite and got my LO (14 months) a size 6 and he was measuring 5-5.5. The lady at stride rite said as long as he's not tripping due to the extra room in the front nor is his heel coming out, it should be fine. I've heard baby feet grow fast so I wanted to make sure these shoes last until the end of summer

She did the same thing and hung out at a five for a while when she was learning to walk. After that between 12-18 months she blew through sizes 6 and 7. She's in a seven now.

@Crumbs: I've made the same decision about buying locally. I've also just resigned myself to the fact that we'll be spending lots of money on ridiculously tiny shoes for a while.

I've been agonizing over baby shoes and decided to just give up and buy them locally when she actually needs them. I wanted a pair of Stride Rite ducklings since they're supposed to be great for first time walkers. 2 weeks ago I measured her feet and just yesterday I measured them again and she's grown 1/2 a size! Wah!

Plus DD got DH's feet. They're 4.5 - 4.75" and she's not even 10 months yet! But that's when she bears weight on them and she's still tippy toeing so shoes that should fit her now don't fit and seem too big since she's still little. For instance, I bought her moccasins (Swedish leather sock kind) and the length fit, but since she's small, the rest of the sock/shoe was baggy and too big. Sigh.

Lol, sorry for the novel, I guess I just had to let it out :P

A is about 11 months and hasn't worn any shoes yet cause he has pillow top feet... nothing fits!

i think he would be about a size 4 right now, though!

I have had J in size 4 (9-12 mos) since he's been wearing shoes because that way he could grow into them... he still fits them just fine. He needs some sandals for summer and I found a good deal on some shoes for fall and I am hesitant about which size to get - stick with 4 or should I bump up to 5?

How quickly did your baby/toddler's feet grow? At age 18 mos, what size were they in? J's feet are almost exactly 4".
