@Mrs. Green Grass; I won't vouch for all ring slings, but most quality ones can be used from birth. I have worn a newborn and even my six-year-old in a ring sling. :)

I bought a mei tai for LO due in November. I like that it's much easier to tie than the moby, and much more comfortable (to me) than a ring sling. I also didn't want to deal with the sizing of the k'tan. I wanted something that would specifically work well for the newborn period. We have a Gemini too, that's meant to be DH's carrier. I'll probably buy my own Gemini later.

I really liked the k'tan until he was big enough for the ergo. Are there any ring-slings rated under 18 pounds? I feel like that's all I've seen, but I don't know much .

@Foodnerd81: Oh I hope you love them! We went back and forth between the Gemini and the Soleil, but no one had the Soleil yet in stores here. I really wanted to try on before buying, and I didn't have time to order and return because I waited until the last minute before a trip to buy it. LO was still fitting in her k'tan then (5.5 months), but it stretches out way more quickly than it did in the beginning, so the Gemini is great for longer trips where I can't wash and dry it. Now I keep the k'tan in the car and use the Gemini for longer days out or walks about the city.

@rattles: I'm glad to read this since I got a k'tan and a beco gemini! I'm hoping I love the k'tan in the beginning-- I know I'd be too intimidated to try the moby, especially out and about.

Based on what you've described, I would try a ring sling. The learning curve isn't as steep as with a wrap, you still have quite a bit of versatility in ways to carry, and you can definitely get a nice, tight, "secure" feeling carry. But for versatility I would always say a wrap first before anything else. I don't hate Mobys, but I feel like if a Moby is a person's only experience with a wrap, it's WAY too narrow of an experience to generalize from. It might be worth your trying to see if there's someone who has a wrap who would lend you theirs, or if there is a local store where you can try one, or if there is a group (either online or in your area) that loans them out to try. I had a wrap on 24 hours a day in Lorelei's first months, and it made life so nice for all of us! Good luck finding something that works for you, and hope my rambling helped some!

I used a k'tan starting when she was 3 days old. I just wasn't confident enough that I'd figure out what I was doing well enough to tie up a moby (both chicken and lazy). DH, LO and I all loved the k'tan during the newborn stage, and I still use it now at 7 months, especially for a hip carry. We also have a Beco Gemini that we love, but I'd stick with Ergo in your case since you already own it.

Ring sling lover here! I'm also anti-Bjorn because of the lack of hip/leg support.

I'm a HUGE ring sling lover! I still use it a ton. Mine is a linen sling from Sleeping Baby Productions. I used it all summer with LO right after she was born, and it worked great for our humid weather. I'm a big fan!

I liked our baby bjorn during the new born phase it offers the most support for a squishy newborn. Then onces she was out of the newborn phase we started using our ergo sport which we love

LO #2 is due in October, and babywearing is something I'd like to do differently this time around, and I'm looking for suggestions.

Here's what I have/ have tried:
1. We had a HotSling. Didn't like it- I think maybe it was too small, but it was a pain to get LO in and out of it, and I kept worrying about whether his airflow was ok.
2. We have a Moby. I know that as a crunchier-leaning parent I'm supposed to love the Moby but I hated it. I thought it was a huge pain in the butt to get on and to deal with in general, and I never felt like LO was really secure it in (like, I'd still use at least one hand to help hold him up/in). I'm sure that a lot of this could be improved with practice with the wrap and watching more videos, but that also sounds like a pain.
3. We borrowed a Baby Bjorn with our first, and we liked it a lot thought we've now given it back. I know it's not ideal for their hips, but DH and I loved how user-friendly it was.
4. We own an Ergo. We do not have an infant insert, but everyone I've talked to says they didn't like the infant insert anyhow.

So here is what I'm thinking: if I were to do it over again, I think I might go with a Beco over the Ergo, but since I have an Ergo and we liked it just fine with #1, I think that's what we'll use once LO #2 is old enough and has the head/neck control for it. So unless someone has a compelling argument for substituting the Ergo with something else, I imagine we'll just go with that.

I mainly want to figure out what to do with LO#2 during the newborn period. With LO#1, we didn't do much babywearing at all because someone was just holding him virtually all the time anyways, and there was hardly ever a time when everyone around LO actually needed to have hands free!

I figure my options are:
1. Learn to love the Moby (if I practice, will I learn to love it? Did anyone really make a good faith effort and still hate it?)
2. Buy a Baby Bjorn since we know how to use it.
3. Buy something else. I saw a girl at the zoo the other day with a Sakura Bloom ring sling and she made that look secure and easy, but who knows if I'd feel the same.

Can I get some feedback/suggestions on options for newborns/nearly-new-borns and babywearing, especially options that are easy to use and hard to screw up and feel secure?
