@locavore_mama: After your first letdown do you just let the pump run at a strong pump, or do you go back to the quick little pumps to get another letdown?

@LovelyPlum: thanks! <3 I need to experiment with times! I've only ever pumped in the morning or early afternoon. I'm curious how much I'll get at night!

@MamaCate: @locavore_mama: Ok, I'll have to try going for longer! I'd love to have a later letdown and get more! I guess ive just been impatient in the past :)

Also, I know everyone says you get the most in the morning when you pump, but I just...don't. I need to eat and drink before I pump. My best pump is usually my second one of the day.

I'm not super helpful here, but I wanted to say hang in there! I've been at work for 6 weeks and am still trying to work on the pumping schedule thing. I have a good routine for the week, but transitioning to weekends has been hard. Hope it goes well!

This is tricky because you are pumping and nursing. I always got the most in the morning about an hour after the first feeding when I was on leave trying to build up my stash. Maybe try adding in the pumping in between nursing sessions until you have enough of a supply to just pump while she gets a bottle? I always pumped for 15 minutes and things slowed down by that point.

Good luck-- it's a big transition!!

@fussygal: I almost always get a second letdown closer to the 20 minute mark. And for me that second letdown was always where I got the most output.

I would perhaps try pumping till 20 minutes and see if you get a second letdown?

And also in the beginning I really didn't get much either! It took me a little while to get used to the pump.

In the mornings I would feed from only one side and pump both sides right after. The morning was when my production was highest. Then you should pump throughout the day every 2-3 hours or whenever you would usually give a bottle.

@locavore_mama: I can't feel it but I can see when it starts coming out and I hit the letdown button then (usually 1.5-3 minutes in). I usually produce milk after that for 4-5 minutes and then sometimes have a second letdown around 7 minutes, but sometimes not. How did you know when to stop/give up?

When I was still home and starting to make up my stash I would pump 3 times a day in addition to regular feedings - in the morning, afternoon and before bed. That really built my supply up and then I switched to just morning and bedtime. What is important though when your at work is that you pump when you would normally be feeding. So if she is getting a bottle at 1:00, you pump then as if you are feeding. Then the supply should stay up and you have that amount to give tomorrow. Again, in the begining I would throw in a few extra sessions to build supply and to keep some extra handy.
Now that I am at work (out of the house) I only pump while he would be feeding so 3 times while I am here (every 3 hours). And I also do the night to empty out before bed.

I always pumped a minimum of 20 minutes. My let down never happened till closer to the 20 minute mark. Can you feel your letdown happening?

So are you pumping when you're working or nursing her or a combo? I would try to pump after nursing if you nurse.

I would pump every time she gets a bottle at the beginning till you have a good pump routine established.

Today is my first day back at work ( :( ) and I'm struggling to create a feeding and pumping schedule for DD. I'm fortunate to work from home and my mom watches her while I'm in the office, but I don't have a milk stash AT ALL (we found out just a few weeks ago that she has MSPI, so any stash would have be thrown out anyway).

We've always been veeeery go with the flow with feeding and fell into our own rhythm during maternity leave. Naps are pretty predictable - 1.5-1.75 hours of awake time and then a 40 minute nap, but she eats whenever (and often) and usually nurses to sleep. She's fine to fall asleep without the nursing though. My work schedule sometimes allows me to go out and feed her, but calls and meetings will keep me busy most of the time. I'm trying to stick to a 2-3 hour feeding schedule, but when should I work in pumping as I try to build up a stash (or at the very least enough for the next day's bottles)? Right after I feed her? Halfway between feedings? Power pumping at night? I've never been a regular pumper so I only get 1-3 ounces per 10 minute session (usually not long after feeding her).

Ack - help! :)
