I had an induction without an epidural and back labor. It was terrible. Dh and my mum had to take turns massaging my lower back for 10 hours straight because the counter-pressure seemed to help me cope better. I spent about an hour near the end of my labor lying on my left side getting Lo to turn (which she luckily did) I would never wish back labor on anyone. I could feel the contractions in my stomach but the pain was all in my back.

Both of my births were sunny side up babies. This caused an immense pain in my back with every contraction. I had the "normal" uterine contractions (where you could feel through your belly the uterus contract) but I didn't care about those cause my back hurt so much. I agree with the sledgehammer reference in the pp. It is mostly because the back of baby's head is pressing against your coccyx.
Lots of counter pressure helps, it is a technique of squeezing the pelvis together, done by a birth partner (DH, SO, or doula etc)
I guess I don't handle pain well cause I literally could not move from the squat/kneeling position and delivered her that way.

I had both too. The pain of the contractions started in the middle of my back, wrapped around my hips and came to the front. It's nasty.

I didn't feel a single contraction in my stomach, they were all in my lower back and wrapped to my hips. It felt like my back was being smashed with a sledgehammer every few minutes. I was in agony when I had to lie on my back. The only time I cried out/cursed during my labor was when I had to lie on my back to get one last quick check the position of the baby's head U/S while they were admitting me. It was excruciating.

ETA: It (usually) happens when the baby is "sunny-side up" facing up towards mom's stomach.

It's indicative of where the pain is. It usually occurs because of a baby being face up, I believe.

I've seen a couple references to "back" labor on hellobee. How does this differ from "regular" labor? Is because you're laying on your back the whole time or does it have to do with where the pain is the worst?

Are there any indicators/risk factors that you will have back labor?
