Yep. Exact same thing happened here. I got three epidurals after 15 hours of back labor. LO was sunny side up. Every single one of them failed. Funny thing is that my anesthesiologist said that the epidural doesn't have a lot of success with back labor, my nurse contradicted her (just like your story! !!) Then the two went back and forth arguing about it. I was soooo mad!

The hardest part for me was going through the trauma of the epidurals and then still feeling the stitches at the end. If I knew I would have felt that I wouldnt have even considered an epi.

@FutureMrsMcK: pushing killed for me too. The back pain migrated to my hips as he descended, and the position they had me in to push realllly hurt my hips. I kinda regretted getting the epidural since I couldn't switch positions.

I know it helped take the edge off, and I think I had less internal pain in my vagina, but holy cow! I wish I had a heads up that epidurals don't always work for back labors! That's why I got mine!

DS was wedged at such an odd angle & face up/out that I only had back labor. I wouldn't say the epidural failed for me, I could totally feel the contractions but felt in control. Before epidural I felt like I was having a seizure or being electrocuted. I also never felt my episiotomy or the vacuum, so I know the epidural was working even though I could feel pain & contractions.

My epidural technically worked, but I did have back pains. Also, the way he was wedged in my pelvis, I felt like it was being pulled apart with every contraction. Worst pain ever.

I had intense back labor and my epidural almost completely took it away. I felt some increased pain after 16 hours and I started pushing, but not nearly as bad as without the epi.

My epi completely took away the pain of my back labor. Maybe I just had a really great anesthesiologist? I only had the epi for a few hours. It was wearing off but still working as I pushed.

Also, why in the world would they tell you it's not going to work?! Seems mighty unprofessional, not to mention discouraging! Might as well say "I can't do my job, sucks for you!"

I got the epidural and it worked for a while to reduce pain, but then the pain came back so strong it made me cry and scream. I couldn't feel my legs well, but I could feel all the back labor pain. Not sure how pushing would have gone since I needed a c-section in the end. Back labor is the worst!

Same here. I was induced and didn't feel any of the pitocin contractions until my water was broken. Actually the pitocin made my contractions stop. I got my epi just minutes after my water was broken and went from a 5 to almost complete in 3 hours. I felt EVERYTHING!!! It was torture!

Same here. My epidural wore off almost immediately and I went through about 15 hours of pitocin labor. I didn't have back labor though.

I got the epidural and 20 minutes later felt everything. They said it was because of how quickly she was moving throught the birth cannal. When they checked after I said I had pain, her head was right there.

Yep, same here. Stopped working completely twice. I had a few hours pain-free when I first got the epidural but it wore off just as I was going into transition, and again while I was pushing (and I got no relief from pushing). I couldn't do anything but sit and breathe. Totally lame.

Did anyone feel their back labor with an epidural? My anesthesiologist said that it never worked for back labors and my nurse said she had never heard of it not working. Mine was still pretty intense even after the epidural. I had to breathe through contractions and all, and felt them all except for about half an hours worth. The crappy part was getting none of the credit of natural birth, and none of the benefit of an epidural. And I couldn't move when the contractions were painful!

Did this happen to anyone else?
