My lower back ached in the beginning but it wasn't sciatica-my chiropractor said my pelvis had started to rotate. After a month or two of treatments, I was back to normal. I also used a lot of heat and ice

@Bao: I'll ask mine what she thinks about it, I think that would be more relaxing than ice!

@MrsTiz: My OB suggested it, it was so low on my back (butt) I don't think it would have been an issue. I'm sure there are varying opinions on that though.

@MrsTiz: OMG, I have the SAME thing, but mine is localized to JUST the right side (of my lower back right above my butt). It KILLS and it hurts to move, sit up (from lying down), stand up, etc. I didn't think there'd be any shot in hell it was sciatica already, but I'm not sure what else it would be! Followin' along to see what advice you get!!

I had sciatica pretty bad, I wouldn't rule that one out. Heating pads and rub downs from DH helped a lot ;)

I think I've been having sciatica-- it's a sharp pain usually shooting up from my right hip in the back, though it only started after 20 weeks or so. I had asked my midwife and she recommended chiropractor, massage, acupuncture, and yoga/stretching-- she suggested starting with the chiropractor since it's probably covered my insurance, while the rest would likely be out of pocket. I actually haven't tried anything besides extra stretching, because it comes and goes and right when it's bad enough that I want to make an appt, it eases up. My upper back also has been hurting, especially sitting at my desk all day.

If you sit all day at work, any chance you can have a big yoga ball to sit on for part of the day? Or even something to put on your desk chair to align your hips better? Mine was worst around 24 weeks and has actually gotten better since then, so it's very possible it will come and go, not that you will be like this for another 6 months!

My back killed during pregnancy. Especially when at my desk at work, sitting on the couch and bed, that was the worse. It was hard for me to get up and out of bed, it hurt so bad. I didn't take anything, I just sucked it up as part of pregnancy. I did make DH give me massages though!

I had unbearable lower back pain also! I went to the chiropractor for adjustments and that helped. I'm on my feet a lot on the weekends so I'm wearing this support belt which helps tremendously with the pain because it lifts your belly and keeps your spine aligned. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I615Q4/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Another thing I've found that helps is using this. It hurts at first when you place the balls and let your body weight melt onto it because you're so tight/knotted up, but after a minute of doing the exercise or just even laying on the ball(s) helps!
http://www.amazon.com/The-Miracle-Ball-Method-Pregnancy/dp/0761160973/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1367847335&sr=8-3&keywords=miracle+ball+method

I got the Miracle ball from Half Price books for like $8 so I'd check that place first to save you some $$.

My OB also mentioned doing some pre-natal yoga/stretching will help also, but I haven't done that yet.

Oh, sounds rough, I'm sorry you're in pain! I'd suggest a massage or a chiropractor, or maybe trying some of the stretches recommended when you google sciatica. I had some back pain for a while, though I don't think as intense as what you describe, and all of these things helped, and it did pass.

@Springtime: It's at the base of my spine and to the left. So mostly dead center but quite often on the left too. I wonder if a prenatal massage might help?

Is it one side? Or in the middle?

I wouldn't rule out sciatica. I had it bad and it started at 6 weeks. It was only on my right side though. I went to the chiropractor and it helped a little.

For the past month or so I've been having pretty awful lower back pain -right at the top of my butt. Lately though it has gotten almost unbearable. If i'm at home i'm laying on my side with a Boppy Bolster pillow on my back. It has ice packs in it, it's pure heaven.

Anyway, it is MISERABLE. If I lay on my back or sit slouched over or too straight up it locks up and I can't even move. Dr. Google's only idea was Sciatica but it doesn't hurt in my actual butt so I can't imagine it's that, especially this early on.

I don't know what to do to make it more bearable. I don't think it's something that warrants a special doctor visit, it's just aches and pains right?? My next appointment is at 16 weeks.
I'm 13 weeks and 3 days now.

I went to BRU to look for a support belt and they only had this thing: http://www.toysrus.com/buy/babies-r-us-exclusives/health-safety/babies-r-us-maternity-support-medium-beige-6027m-10813242 and I don't have a big enough belly for that yet.

Has anyone else had to deal with this? What did you do about it?
