I teach elementary school, and I can't remember ever getting a back to school gift. If anything, parents often donate classroom supplies at the beginning of the year: paper towels, tissues, Lysol wipes, hand sanitizer, etc. The things that all the students use, but the school doesn't necessarily provide...

Typically, we get holiday gifts and maybe an end of the year gift...every now and then, a little something for Valentines.

@T-Mom: I would buy some classroom supplies too! I bet you can just hand it to the teacher at drop off and ask him/her to give it to her teacher?

GL to her and you on Monday! ((hugs))

@T-Mom: I was thinking about this too - but how do you get said gift to the teacher? Put it in your child's backpack ?
I have a feeling DS would forget about it! :bummed:

I've never received anything of the sort, but I'm also a high school teacher and that's a whole different animal.

That said, if you were to bring me boxes of tissues, hand sanitizer or school supplies, you'd be my favorite parent ever. That stuff comes out of my own money and we go through tissue boxes by the dozens.

I totally hear you guys @HLK208: and @Mrs. High Heels: ... There are plenty of opportunities to thank the teachers I'm sure...

I honestly felt overwhelmed for the teacher after visiting the classroom on Friday for our meet the teacher event. .. Keeping 25 6 yr olds learning for an entire day, what a tough job! I'm entrusting my kid to her and she is going to keep her safe in a field of 700 other kids... Our old school was 18 kids for two teachers.. This seems way harder. She has two small kids at hkme.. I started to feel kind of sorry for her! Props to all the teachers I don't know how you all do it...

I've never heard of this, but I'm a nay. Honestly, I probably wouldn't do this because it's the beginning of the school year - I don't even know the teacher yet, or how good they are... and there are so many opportunities to give gifts throughout the year - holidays, teacher's appreciation, end of the year. I don't think it should be a given or expectation that gifts should be given at the start of a school year.

I've never gotten one as a teacher, but I would love a walmart/target/staples/amazon gift card...this time of year we spend soooo much of our own money on classroom supplies and books. I would never expect it though!

I have gotten baked goods- cookies, muffins etc, from families that I have taught previous kids. It is not super common. I teach 2/3 so it is more common for my returning kids, or ones I taught siblings. The kids make cards, mom bakes some cookies etc. I have never gotten an actual gift or gift card....

Wow - is this a thing? No advice as I'm sure anything would be a super nice gesture. I just kind of can't believe you have to give beginning of the year, Christmas/holiday break, and end of year gifts these days!

I've only gotten a few first day gifts in eight years as a classroom teacher. But at the school but I am currently at (not a classroom teacher) it is fairly common. I agree that a small little gesture like gc or something for the classroom is nice.

@T-Mom: I absolutely understand your wish to do something special for her teacher, especially with the allergy concerns. Just know that anything you do will be very appreciated so don't feel you need to spend hours making something from Pinterest! A gift card and handwritten note would be wonderful!

@jhd: yes it's kind of intimidating, I just searched Pinterest and there are a million ideas for back to school gifts! But I'm really going to be depending on her teacher to not only teach my Dd but keep her safe from peanuts (due to allergy) so I thought it might be nice to let her know in advance that I appreciate her help..

I don't think I ever gave a gift to a high school teacher, how sad!

I taught high school so obviously it's a whole different thing. I would not feel obligated to get anything. I sometimes got a small (like very small) gift from a few students at Christmas. Basically of you would like to do something go for it, but don't feel pressured to!

I usually got items off my classroom wish list and that was great! Maybe a small starbucks gift card or something else small but it certainly wasn't the norm to get a gift. A handwritten note or card saying you are excited for a great year might be a nice touch too! :) the first weeks are overwhelming for teachers and support and encouragement are invaluable <3
