@Mrs. Lion: from my vague understanding, the problem with background TV is the visual stimulation and not being able to process the flickering along with the noise/sound, like it doesn't match up for them because they can't process it at the same time. I do turn off any music, etc. if we are actively reading or he is reading by himself because I think it makes it hard to focus on words. But that's just my opinion!

@Mrs. Lion: I wonder the same too! I either have music on in the background or some sort of background noise in one form or another.

@Mrs. Lion: I can't tell you scientifically, but I can say they're the same in my house. We either have the TV or Pandora on all day - we usually go back and forth. We still play together, read, & interact. She behaves the same way & plays the same way.

@Mrs. Lion: When I was on mat leave I used to listen to Pandora all the time with LO. But I'd put it on a baby station and sing/dance/do other things that made me look like an idiot in front of her. I guess the difference there is that she's looking at/interacting with me and not a tv screen.

@lawbee11: thanks :) i have actually read that article and others like it...none of them seem to mention other background noise. I agree though. If it doesn't affect interaction it might not matter. But i do wonder about the overstimulation aspect.

@Mrs. Lion: This article has an interesting discussion about the tv on as background (it was posted a couple of days ago in the screen time thread). http://families.naeyc.org/learning-and-development/music-math-more/how-true-are-our-assumptions-about-screen-time

It doesn't discuss other types of background noise, though.

ETA: It does say this: "University of Massachusetts researchers also looked at how parents’ interactions with their children differed under TV-on and TV-off conditions. They found that when the TV was on, there was a 21 percent decrease in the amount of time that parents spent interacting with their children. And the quality of those interactions (as measured by how actively they played together) decreased too (Kirkorian et al. 2009)." So I would guess that if Pandora or podcasts are affecting your interactions with your LO then it may not be that different.

ETA2: I don't mean you specifically...I meant "you" in general.

I have been wondering about this for a long time but i always forget to ask my ped....curious if anyone knows the answer...

Is all background noise the same as tv background noise? I know the aap recommends against having the tv on with littles in the room, but i often listen to pandora or talk radio/podcasts. Sometimes i feel like there is really no difference.

What do you think?
