@snowjewelz: That's what you would think, right... I haven't talked to other parents but the family I saw there didn't get any emails either. I imagined some people must have got an email but the host should think I could have missed someone and let me make sure I check my email every 10 seconds.... and I assume everyone gets email on their phones nowadays, right....

@irene: Ugh, that sucks that happened! If they know who is coming shouldn't they have really reached out to each family that morning instead of letting people go to the park to read the note?!

Good luck to you! I hope it will be nice and sunny on the day of the party...

I don't have any advice but I wanted to share a cautionary tale of us getting "stood up" for a party because of weather last weekend.... We were supposed to be at a park over the weekend for this girl's birthday party. It started drizzling in the morning, just light rain, so we wanted to drop by and see how it goes, to at least drop off the gift. I remember the picnic tables are under a covered area so even if it starts pouring we'd be good. I equipped DS with rain boots and rain coats and such. The party was at 10:30 and we were indeed 1/2 hour late. Since it states it will be over at 12pm I didn't think it was a big problem.

We went there and we did not see any of DS' friends. There was a sign at the covered picnic area saying the party has been relocated due to rain, please check your email for the new address. I did not receive any email. So I found the invitation (which was really an emailed PDF) and emailed the RSVP email I got on the invitation (and yes, I RSVP'd by the deadline). There was no response. THere we saw another family showed up and I asked them if they received any emails, they also got none. They also tried to email, call another parent who was also invited to the party, just no one picked up or reply. After playing in the park in drizzling rain for 1/2 hour, it started really raining (11:30pm) and we all went home. At around 2:30pm, I finally got an email from the father, saying sorry for the miscommunication, he sent his father there at the park to tell people of the new address, but obviously I guess we were late so we missed him. I asked if they relocated to their home and they said yes and apologized again with very short messages.

I wasn't mad when I was at the park trying to manage my 4 year old in the rain holding the gift while texting this email with no response, I truly understand.... but after receiving those very short messages back I was a bit annoyed. I guess I am more expecting a longer reply with a more sincere apology and a bit more of what happened, how was the party...etc. And honestly if you relocated your party last minute.... I'd make sure I check my email just in case anyone emails? If their home was inconvenient to host so many people, maybe just reply and say sorry we can not host more people and this is unexpected and maybe tell me to go home? Or the sign just say the party has been canceled so I could just go home instead of waiting in the rain for a possible response? Just a little annoyed..... So whatever you do make sure you don't do what I described above :)

Party for our little guy turning one is this Sunday and I was hoping if it rains at all it would be moved to Saturday or wait till Monday. I'm going to not pray for Saturday now knowing you posted here haha. We too, planned a bunch of outdoor backyard fun activities for the kids. I'm not going to stress too much, if it rains we'll all just mingle inside the house, some can still enjoy the rainy air on our large deck. Hoping for the best!!!

Do you have a YMCA or a gymnastics gym nearby? They usually do 2-3 hour parties for not very much if they have availability.

It poured last year for DDs birthday. We only had about 25 people though so just moved inside, it was crazy but we survived.

Does your park district have gym space or a party room that you can rent the day before? In Chicago, several neighborhood parks have indoor gyms/party rooms you can rent out. Doesn't really provide a replacement activity but if you didn't want to cancel, you could wait until Thursday evening / Friday and then change the venue to a low cost alternative. If you do find a place, I'd email everyone and then also leave signage up on your front door for anybody who missed the message.

@mediagirl: I would rent a large tent and have it set up so that it attaches to your house so people can flow in and out and therefore it basically expands the available space so you can fit all 45 people. Thunderstorms in the south are usually pop up rather than an all day thing so you can use the coverage on and off as needed. Also, even if it doesn't storm, having the tent for shade when it's 96 degrees would probably be nice!

No one I planned, but I know it happened to my 4th birthday party or around then. My parents somehow brought it inside, pulled put all my Legos and turned it into a Lego party.

Have you ever had a backup plan for an outdoor birthday party? What was your backup plan and did you end up using it?

We have 45 people coming to our house for a backyard splash party on Saturday and the weather does not look good so far. I know the weather can change but I don't think my house can hold 45 people....

What type of backup plan would you make?
